Moto3 is a motorsport class for motorcycles that use single-cylinder four-stroke engines with 250 cc.
As part of the FIM - Motorcycle World Championship replaces since the 2012 season , the 125- cc class, which since 1949 has passed. The first Moto3 motorcycles were used at the national level as early as 2011.
Technical regulations
Since the 2012 season, only one motorcycle may be removed from a race for the motorcycle world championship . Replacement motorcycles are therefore effectively prohibited. However, up to eight engines can be used throughout the season. The engines are registered and sealed by the FIM. Newly built motors or those without an intact seal are automatically classified as new.
There are four stroke - reciprocating piston engines with a maximum displacement cc of 250 and a cylinder used. These naturally aspirated engines may rotate a maximum of 14,000 rpm (from 2015 a maximum of 13,500 rpm) with a bore of maximum 81 mm . The motors may have a maximum of four valves without hydraulic or pneumatic actuation, the camshaft must be driven by a timing chain . The timing and stroke of the valve control must not be variably influenced by camshaft adjustments . The aim is to achieve a maximum cost of 12,000 euros per engine.
Variable inlet lengths are not allowed for the inlet and fuel systems. Gas is only given mechanically, electronic drive-by-wire systems are prohibited. The maximum of two petrol injection valves must be upstream of the mixture inlet valves. The fuel pressure must not exceed 5.0 bar and only fuel prescribed by the FIM may be used.
There are provisions for the materials that can be used to reduce the price of motorcycles and engines. So must camshafts , crankshafts , piston pins are made of iron-based alloys. The crankcase , cylinder blocks and cylinder heads must be made of cast aluminum alloy. Pistons must be made of aluminum alloy. Connecting rods , valves and valve springs must be made of titanium or iron-based alloys, with the element mentioned forming the main part in the alloy.
The exhaust pipe must not be variable in length and contain no moving parts. Measured upright, the exhaust may generate a maximum of 115 dB / A.
The engines reach around 50 hp, which, with the typically low weight of the motorcycle (82 kg empty) and the driver (60 kg), enables significantly better driving performance compared to heavier road vehicles, e.g. B. an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in less than three seconds and a top speed of 235 km / h.
The transmissions have a maximum of six gears. Two different gear ratios can be selected. Electromechanical or electrohydraulic clutches are not permitted.
Only ignition / injection controllers (ECU) approved by the organizers are allowed. In addition, the engine control in hardware and software must remain unchanged and contain the rev limiter .
The chassis may be prototypes , the construction of which is optional within the technical regulations. The minimum weight for the combination of rider and motorcycle is 148 kg. The landing gear must be conventional, passive and mechanical and must not contain any electronic landing gear height adjustment. The suspension springs must be coil springs and only consist of iron-based alloys. For cost reasons, only steel brake discs are allowed.
The wheels may only be made of magnesium and aluminum. The rim dimensions are 2.50 "× 17" at the front and 3.50 "× 17" at the rear. Typical tire sizes are 95/75-R17 at the front and 115/75-R17 at the rear.
The number of tires per World Cup event will be limited and a single supplier will be named by the FIM.
