Daniel "Dani" Pedrosa Ramal (born September 29, 1985 in Sabadell ) is a former Spanish motorcycle racer and three-time world champion in the classes up to 125 cm³ and 250 cm³. He lives in both Castellar del Vallès and London .

Career

Daniel Pedrosa was the first son of Antonio and Basi Pedrosa. From a young age he was enthusiastic about motorcycle racing and began his career on minibikes . At the age of 13 he applied for the first MoviStar Junior Cup under the direction of Alberto Puig , the half-liter winner from 1995. Pedrosa Puig stood out among 4,500 applicants, who first placed him in the top 100 and then, despite insufficient results, in the cup recorded. In his words, Dani caught his eye at the time because of his thirst for knowledge and his ability to understand the motorcycle through and through, as well as his deep reluctance to allow himself to be overtaken.

Two years later, following the advice of his mentor Puig, Pedrosa left school and entered the motorcycle world championship professionally . He contested his first Grand Prix on a Honda in the 125 cc class in Suzuka, Japan, in 2001 . The first win followed a year later in Assen, the Netherlands . In the 2003 season , Pedrosa secured his first world title early on by winning the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang . A week later, Pedrosa suffered the worst accident of his career to date. At the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island he hit a makeshift earth wall and shattered both ankles . Nevertheless, he rose to the 250 cc class in the following year and won the opening race in South Africa despite the lack of testing opportunities . After a dominant season, Pedrosa secured the 2004 world title as the youngest world champion in the history of this class . In the 2005 season he was even able to repeat this success.

In 2006 Pedrosa then went into the MotoGP class and was the Repsol Honda - factory team , the new team-mate Nicky Hayden . Pedrosa immediately took second place in the first race in Jerez , the first victory in the new class followed at the Grand Prix of China in Shanghai , in his fourth MotoGP race. Another in Donington . The low point of his career was almost the penultimate race at Estoril , in which, for the first time in six years of racing, he crashed another driver - team-mate and title contender Hayden. As a result, he fell behind his rival Valentino Rossi in the World Championship standings , but was still able to secure the title in the final race in Valencia . Pedrosa finished the season as Rookie of the Year and fifth overall. In 2007 Pedrods continued to show strong performances and only had to admit defeat Casey Stoner in the final standings . As runner-up world champion, Pedrosa now contested the next season . A fall during test drives and tire problems did not give the Spaniard the hoped-for world title, he only finished third with 249 points. In the years that followed, the Honda driver was denied great success due to many injuries. Pedrosa celebrated his most successful season so far in 2010 , but with four wins and five second places it was only enough for second place behind Jorge Lorenzo .

In 2012 he also reached second place with 332 points behind Jorge Lorenzo with 350 points. Pedrosa even won one more victory than the future world champion with seven wins.

After the 2018 season, he ended his career in MotoGP.

character

Pedrosa is considered a quiet, introverted person. He usually seems a bit reserved. According to his team, working with him is a pleasant thing. For example, head technician Mike Leitner told Motorsport aktuell in 2004 : “After Dani's accident (he had a serious crash in Phillip Island) we tried to rebuild the gears because he still had problems with his foot. After the third non-working modification, he said we should leave it as it was originally. He has a handicap and has to cope with it. Dani impresses me as a person even more than as a driver. He is very honest and wants us to be honest too. He would never blame the team for a bad result if it wasn't really like that. "

Pedrosa's mentor Alberto Puig says: “Of course he can get angry too. Sometimes I think he wants to jump up, yell, and throw something around like others in the paddock do. But then he just sits there, closes his mouth and thinks. Sometimes I wish he would yell after all. "
