Cirillo "Nello" Pagani (born October 11, 1911 in Milan , † October 19, 2003 in Bresso ( MI )) was an Italian motorcycle and automobile racer .
Career
During his extraordinarily long career, which lasted from 1928 to 1955, Pagani was known for his versatility. In addition to motorcycle road races, he competed in speedway, off-road and automobile races.
Pagani won the world championship title in the 125 cc class in the first season of the motorcycle world championship in 1949 .
His son Alberto Pagani was also a motorcycle racer and in 1972 was 500 cc vice world champion on MV Agusta behind Giacomo Agostini .
Motorcycle racing
Nello Pagani started his motorcycle career before the Second World War and was able to achieve many victories in both national and international races. For example, he won the Italian 250 cm³ championship in 1934, 1937 and 1938 and in 1939 the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring in the 250 cm³ class on Moto Guzzi .
In 1949 Pagani became the first 125 cm³ world champion in the history of the motorcycle world championship. When he won the Swiss Grand Prix , he also won the first ever 125 cc Grand Prix. Overall, Pagani won two of the three races held on FB-Mondial and at the end of the season had 27 points, almost twice as many points as the vice world champion, his compatriot Renato Magi . In the 500 cc class, he was runner-up behind the British Leslie Graham on Gilera . Although he was able to get more points than Graham in the course of the season, this won the world championship because only the three best results came into the world championship standings.
Until 1955 Nello Pagani competed on Mondial, Gilera and later on MV Agusta in the classes up to 125 cm³ and up to 500 cm³, but could not win a single race. After the end of his active career, he worked as a sports director at MV Agusta.
In 1967 Pagani returned to the saddle of a racing machine and won the Motogiro d'Italia on a 750 cc Norton .
Nello Pagani has contested a total of 22 motorcycle Grand Prix in his career, won four of them and made it onto the podium eleven times.
motor race
Nello Pagani also competed successfully in automobile races in his career. In 1947 and 1948 he won the Grand Prix de Pau .
On June 4, 1950, Pagani contested his only automobile world championship run at the Swiss Grand Prix . He finished on Maserati the Scuderia Achille Varzi of Achille Varzi seventh. At the Gran Premio di Modena in the same year he was fourth.
