Carrera Panamericana 1954
The fifth and final Carrera Panamericana , also V Carrera Panamericana Mexico, Competencia Internacional , took place from November 23 to 27, 1954 and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The 1954 Carrera was the last road race under this name until the event was reintroduced as a historic race in 2006. The winner was Italian Umberto Maglioli in a Ferrari 375 Plus Pinin Farina . This race was also overshadowed by fatal accidents, a circumstance that contributed to the suspension. Six people, including four race participants, died. The two Argentinians Juan Antonio Gatti and Alfredo Doura had a fatal accident before the race in a training accident. Ford Robinson, Jack McAfee's co-driver , died after the Ferrari 375 Plus rolled over during the first stage. Another co-driver, Leopoldo Olvera Zabado, lost his life during the fifth stage; In this section of the route, two spectators were also killed when the Argentine Patricio Achurra lost control of his Ford and drove into a group of people.
