The Ferrari 500 Mondial was a racing sports car that was developed by Scuderia Ferrari in 1953 .

Development history and technology

Called Mondial ( . It mondiale = . Dt World Cup ) took Enzo Ferrari relation to the first single-seater -Weltmeisterschaftswagen the Scuderia, the Ferrari 500 - Formula 2 -vans with Alberto Ascari drivers world championships in 1952 and 1953 had won.

The 500 Mondial was the first production vehicle from Ferrari that was powered by a four-cylinder in- line engine. Aurelio Lampredi designed a 2 liter engine with a stroke ratio of 90 to 78 mm. The new and special feature of the engine were two overhead camshafts driven by gears . The lubrication worked with a dry sump . The magnetos were installed in front of the engine and supplied two candles per cylinder. The front wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones with transverse leaf springs, and there was a De-Dion axle at the rear . The brake system with hydraulic actuation was provided with drums on all wheels, the steering worked via worm and gear sector. In the second series, built from 1955, the output of the 4-cylinder engine was increased from 155 hp (114 kW) to 170 hp (125 kW); the previous four-speed gearbox was replaced by a five-speed high-speed gearbox. The front suspension has also been adjusted; the transverse leaf spring was replaced by coil springs.

32 vehicles were built; 30 Spyder and two racing berlinettes with bodywork at Pininfarina . The 500 Mondial was the first Ferrari model that was also bodyworked by Scaglietti . The initiative for this came from Dino Ferrari , Enzo's son, who had the chassis of a Ferrari 166 clad. This later became the first Scaglietti 500 Mondial.

Racing history

The car made its racing debut at the Casablanca 12-hour race in 1953 ; at the helm Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari. The duo was only beaten by team-mates Giuseppe Farina and Piero Scotti in the Ferrari 375MM . The Frenchman François Picard clinched the first victory at the Agadir Grand Prix in February 1954. The Mondial quickly became a popular racing vehicle that was sold to private drivers soon after production began.

Well-known drivers such as Bob Drake , Masten Gregory , Harry Schell , Richie Ginther , Phil Hill , Jean Guichet and Charlie Kolb drove this type of Ferrari racing car as well as many others. Umberto Maglioli won the Imola Grand Prix for the factory team in 1954 and came second there in 1955 . This model was driven in sports car races until 1964.

In 267 races between 1953 and 1964 there were 13 overall and 46 class wins.
