The Ferrari 330P was a racing car that Scuderia Ferrari developed for sports car racing in 1963.

Development history and technology

The first Ferrari racing model of the 330P series was an adapted Ferrari 250P . The difference was in the engine. While a 3-liter V12 engine provided power in the 250P , the 12-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3.9 liters was installed in the 330P. As in the 330LMB and 330TRI , the engine block was taken from the Ferrari 400 Superamerica and adapted for racing. The cylinder heads, pistons, the valve drive and the dry sump lubrication were taken from the 250 Testa Rossa . The performance data vary depending on the source and should have been in the range between 370 and 390 hp.

In 1964 the 330P was the counterpart to the 275P . Chassis and body were completely identical. The only differentiator was the engine; in the 275P it had 3.3-liter displacement, in the 330P it had 3.9-liter, with 390 HP it made 20 HP more, but also made the car 30 kg heavier than the 275P model.

Ferrari specified the chassis 0810, 0818, 0820 and 0822 as an adaptation of the 275P, the chassis 0814 as a counterpart to the 250P.

Racing history

A 330P was first used in the Silverstone Grand Prix in July 1963 . The car was registered by the British racing team Maranello Concessionaires , driven by Mike Parkes . The Briton did not see the checkered flag after the fastest training time due to an engine failure. The race was won by Roy Salvadori in a Cooper T61 Monaco .

It was first used in the sports car world championship in 1964 at the Sebring 12-hour race . In Sebring, the team from Maranello lived up to its role as favorites. The Scuderia celebrated a superior triple victory. Mike Parkes and Umberto Maglioli won ahead of their type colleagues Ludovico Scarfiotti and Nino Vaccarella (both teams contested the race in a Ferrari 275P). Third place went to John Surtees  - who started the race from pole position and set the fastest race lap - and Lorenzo Bandini on a 330P (chassis 0822). Closest to the Scuderia was the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe by Bob Holbert and Dave MacDonald . The Americans were already three laps behind third place and finished fourth. Two more 330Ps failed. Graham Hill and Joakim Bonnier's Maranello Concessionaires 330P (chassis 0818) had a gearbox failure; Chassis 0810 of the North American Racing Team of Pedro Rodríguez and John Fulp had to be parked prematurely after an engine failure.

In Le Mans , the 330P came in second (Maranello Concessionaires; driven by Hill / Bonnier) and third (works car, driven by Surtees / Bandini). Overall victory went to Jean Guichet and Nino Vaccarella in the factory 275P. Graham Hill celebrated his first victory with the racing car type in August 1964 at the RAC Tourist Trophy, which is part of the world championship .

This was followed by overall victories at the Canadian Grand Prix (Pedro Rodríguez), the 1000 km race in Paris (Hill / Bonnier) and by Ludovico Scarfiotti at the Trofeo Bettoia .

330P were driven in sports car races until 1967, replaced by the P2 in 1965 for the works team.
