The Ferrari F138 was the 46th Formula 1 race car of the Scuderia Ferrari . It was used in the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship . The car was presented in Maranello on February 1, 2013 .

The name of the car is made up of the combination of the year and the number of cylinders in order to mark the last year of the V8 engines . From the 2014 season , V6 turbo engines were used in Formula 1.

Technology and development

The F138 is the successor to the F2012 . The car hides the "nose hump" through the newly introduced vanity panel . The car developed by Simone Resta is powered by a V8 engine called " Ferrari Type 056 " with a displacement of 2.4 liters, which develops an output of around 550 kW (≈750 hp). The brakes come from Brembo , the rims from OZ Racing and the tires from Pirelli . Like all Formula 1 vehicles of the 2013 season, the F138 is equipped with KERS and DRS .

As the wind tunnel in Maranello was revised, the aerodynamics of the F138 was developed at the Toyota Motorsport plant in Cologne-Marsdorf .

The F138 is an evolution of last year's car, Ferrari put the emphasis in the development on the weight distribution and the reduction of the weight of individual components. The struts that connect the front wing to the nose have been redesigned. The side pods of the vehicle have been modified to improve aerodynamics. The air inlet above the cockpit has also been modified. The wheel suspensions on the front and rear axles have a new geometry, and the exhaust system has also been completely redesigned. The engine has been better integrated into the overall concept of the car, so that the connections between engine, chassis and transmission have been completely revised. The weight and size of the KERS have been reduced.

Unlike most other vehicles, the DRS is not operated with a button on the steering wheel, but with the foot. There is an additional pedal to the left of the brake pedal for this purpose.

Like the previous model, the Ferrari F138 has a front suspension with tension struts instead of compression struts.

Painting and sponsorship

The F138 is painted in classic red, plus there is a white stripe along the entire length of the car and a black stripe underneath. Major sponsors visible on the car are Hublot , Kaspersky Lab , Santander and Shell .

driver

Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are still the regular drivers in the team. Andrea Bertolini , Jules Bianchi , Marc Gené , Davide Rigon and Pedro de la Rosa are used as test drivers .
