The Lotus E21 is the Formula 1 - racing cars of the Lotus F1 Team for the Formula 1 2013 season . It is the team's fourth race car since owned by Genii Capital and is the twenty-first race car designed and built at the Enstone factory in the UK ; therefore it bears the name E21 . The engine supplier for the vehicle is Renault . The Lotus E21 was presented on January 28, 2013 as the first vehicle of the 2013 season in Enstone. The presentation was broadcast live on the YouTube internet platform .

Technology and development

The Lotus E21 is the successor to the Lotus E20 . Like the E20, the car designed by James Allison has a distinctive hump, although the FIA gave the teams the option of using a so-called vanity panel to cover up the aesthetic flaw.

Total supplies the fuel and lubricants for the racing car . Like the KERS , the engine comes from Renault and has an output of more than 550 kW (≈750 PS). The magnesium wheels come from OZ Racing , the tires are supplied by the Italian manufacturer Pirelli , like all other teams .

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of the 2013 season, the E21 is equipped with KERS and DRS .

The Lotus E21 is a further development of the previous model. The wheel suspensions on the front and rear axles have been fundamentally revised to ensure better aerodynamic possibilities. In addition, the front and rear wings have been further developed.

During the season, Lotus tested a passive DRS system several times, but it was only used in the race at the British Grand Prix . In addition, Lotus developed a version for the second half of the season with a ten centimeter (according to other sources 7.5 cm) longer wheelbase, which was used for the first time in training for the Italian Grand Prix . For this purpose, the angle of the front suspension was changed and a longer vehicle nose was used and the front wing was positioned further forward. Behind the attachment point of the front suspension, the car remained unchanged. The first race of this version took place at the Korean Grand Prix .

For the German Grand Prix , Lotus had to change the front suspension of the E21 because it did not comply with the technical regulations. Instead of a maximum of three, the two lower wishbones, the strut and the handlebar came together with four suspension elements at one pivot point.

Painting and sponsorship

Like its predecessor, the E21 is painted in black and gold. Thanks to the sponsors Total and Genii Capital , the car is also given red accents. Further sponsor stickers come from the products Rexona and Clear from the Unilever Group as well as from the energy drink burn .

driver

Nothing has changed in the Lotus driver pairing, Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean will contest the season. Test drivers will be Jérôme D'Ambrosio , Nicolas Prost and Davide Valsecchi .

Two races before the end of the season, Heikki Kovalainen was signed to replace the injured Raikkonen.

2013 season

The start of the season in Australia went well. Kimi Raikkonen won with a two-stop strategy, while his direct competitors chose a three-stop strategy. During the season there was no further victory, but Raikkonen was able to achieve six second places and one third place. Grosjean came third five times and came second in the penultimate race, the US Grand Prix . Kovalainen could not achieve any points in his two races. At the end of the season, Lotus finished fourth in the constructors' championship.
