Reports

backgrounds

The 2013 Australian Grand Prix was the first Formula 1 Grand Prix to be held without a valid or accepted agreement in the 32-year history of the Concorde Agreements . Although there was no valid Concorde Agreement between 2008 and mid-2009, the teams continued to adhere to the previously valid one. Negotiations for a new Concorde Agreement for 2013 were well advanced by the time of the race weekend.

At the Australian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Valtteri Bottas ( Williams ), Jules Bianchi ( Marussia ), Max Chilton (Marussia), Giedo van der Garde ( Caterham ) and Esteban Gutiérrez ( Sauber ) made their Formula 1 debut at this Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton ( Mercedes ), Nico Hülkenberg ( Sauber), Sergio Pérez ( McLaren ) and Charles Pic (Caterham) started for their new teams for the first time. Adrian Sutil ( Force India ) contested a Formula 1 Grand Prix again after a break of 476 days.

With Jenson Button (three times), Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen , Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Steve Chopping (AUS), Paul Gutjahr (SUI), Vincenzo Spano (VEN) and Danny Sullivan (USA) acted as race stewards .

With stickers on his helmet, Felipe Massa remembered the recently deceased Wilson Fittipaldi sr., The father of Formula 1 racing drivers Emerson and Wilson at the Grand Prix . Massa is friends with the Fittipaldi family.

training

Toro Rosso driver Jean-Éric Vergne in the first free practice

In the first free practice session, Vettel set the first fastest time of the season ahead of the Ferrari drivers Massa and Alonso on a slightly cloudy but dry track . In the second free practice, Vettel stayed in front. His team mate Mark Webber followed in second place ahead of Nico Rosberg . In this training session, Rosberg rolled out shortly before the end of the session with suspected gearbox damage. Hamilton and van der Garde slipped into the gravel, which also ended their training early.

In the third free practice session on Saturday morning it began to rain after 16 minutes, so that it was no longer possible to improve the times achieved. All four tire types were used in the course of the training. Romain Grosjean achieved the best time in practice on the dry track and was also the fastest on the wet track. Alonso took second, Massa third. Gutiérrez set the second fastest time in the rain, ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne . Vettel parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with an electronic malfunction. Rosberg's KERS was not working properly so he could only use it briefly.

Qualifying

The start of qualifying was postponed by 30 minutes because the track was too wet. The drivers started with the full wets and switched to intermediates at the end. Some drivers made mistakes on the wet track. Van der Garde slipped off the track in the early stages and lost his front wing. Hamilton turned and hit the perimeter with the stern, slightly damaging the rear wing. Massa turned and hit the front of the tire wall, damaging the front wing. Everyone drove on and had their vehicles repaired. Shortly before the end of the section, Pic and Gutiérrez damaged their vehicles by turning and thus triggered yellow phases. In the end, Rosberg set the fastest time in the first segment. The Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Gutiérrez and Pastor Maldonado were eliminated. Pic also failed because of the 107 percent rule and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. However, he was subsequently admitted to the start of the Grand Prix because he was within 107 percent of every free practice session. Due to the rain that started again, the second segment was initially postponed by 50 minutes and then completely canceled for Saturday. The second and third parts of qualifying have been postponed to 11 a.m. local time on Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning Rosberg set the fastest lap in the second segment on a drying track with intermediates. The Toro Rosso pilots as well as Bottas, Pérez, Sutil and Hülkenberg were eliminated. In the third section it continued to dry up, so the drivers drove their fastest lap on slicks. Vettel achieved the first pole position of the season ahead of his teammates Webber and Hamilton. Hamilton was the only driver in the top 10 who did not drive for the same team in 2013 as last year.

Vettel commented on pole position as follows: “ Of course I'm happy with the result, but because of the changed schedule, we can't be too euphoric. The race will start in a few hours, so we'll have to sit down on our pants again. It's a very good result for me and the team, with Mark in second place we have the entire front row to ourselves - a surprise after we didn't know where we were in the winter tests. "

This was the first time in Formula 1 history that the decision on the starting grid was made outside of Japan and the third time on a Sunday. The last time the starting grid was determined at the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix was on Sunday.

run

The weekend was over for Sauber driver Hülkenberg even before the pit lane opened. A malfunction in the gasoline system was discovered on his vehicle. The racing team therefore decided not to use the vehicle in the race for safety reasons. Hülkenberg described the decision not to start as "extremely frustrating". Hülkenberg's team-mate Gutiérrez did not have this difficulty, so he took part in the Grand Prix as planned. The other vehicles did not move up on the grid.

At the start, Vettel kept the lead and took off right at the front. Webber did not start so well from second place and fell back to seventh place. He stated after the race that his KERS hadn't worked for the first 20 laps. Both Ferraris had good starts. Massa went from fourth to second, Alonso from five to three. Hamilton and Raikkonen completed the first five after the first round. On the second lap, Alonso tried to drive past his team-mate Massa. However, Massa defended himself and maintained the position. Shortly afterwards, Massa drove the fastest race lap up to that point and caught up with the leading Vettel. Behind the Ferrari drivers, Hamilton and Raikkonen exchanged positions on the second lap.

The first regular pit stops began as early as the fourth lap. The trigger for this was that the durability of the Supersoft tire compound was very short. Räikkönen, Vettel and the Ferrari drivers pitted before the Mercedes drivers and switched to medium, so that Hamilton and Rosberg led the race in the meantime. Behind them were Sutil and Pérez, who, unlike the pilots from the top 10, had started the race with the medium tire compound. While Pérez soon fell behind Vettel and the Ferrari drivers, Sutil maintained his position. After the Mercedes drivers had also pitted and put on medium tires, Sutil was in the lead. Sutil was the first to lead a Formula 1 Grand Prix. In the meantime there was a collision between Chilton and van der Garde at the end of the field, in which Chilton damaged his front wing. He drove on after a repair stop.

Before Sutil pitted for the first time, he managed to increase the lead over second-placed Vettel, who had fresher tires. Alonso pitted for the second time in the 19th round. A later stop by Alonso was originally planned, but Alonso decided to stop on this lap. A lap later, Sutil and Vettel also pitted. Alonso managed to overtake both of them with the earlier pit stop. Vettel overtook Sutil a little later. Massa led the race for two laps, but was then called to the pits. After the race, Massa described the later pit stop as a mistake compared to Alonso. All pilots stayed with the tire compound medium. While Raikkonen stayed outside longer and led the race in front of the Mercedes drivers, the Grand Prix for Maldonado was over after a driving error in the first corner. Maldonado turned on the gravel and couldn't come out. Shortly afterwards, Rosberg rolled out with an electronic defect. Rosberg described after the race that the failure had been announced over several laps.

While light rain, which had no influence on the track conditions, set in, Alonso attacked Hamilton. Hamilton tried to defend his position. He braked himself and lost his position to Alonso. Since his tires were damaged, he pitted for the second time shortly afterwards. A little later, the other pilots from the leading group, with the exception of Sutil, pitted. Raikkonen for the second time, Alonso, Massa and Vettel for the third time. All pilots stayed on the medium tires. Raikkonen stayed in this group with a bigger lead over Alonso, Vettel and Massa, while Sutil led the race again.

In the 42nd lap, Hamilton pitted for the third time. Originally, Hamilton and Mercedes had planned a two-stop strategy. Shortly afterwards, Raikkonen overtook Sutil and took the lead in the Grand Prix. At the same time, Webber also passed di Resta with a determined maneuver. A little later, Sutil pitted for the second time and switched to the Supersoft mixture, which he had not used before. In the meantime, Daniel Ricciardo had ended the race with a damaged exhaust in the pits.

In the final phase, the positions remained almost unchanged. Sutil struggled with the supersoft tire compound and fell behind. After the race he explained that these tires had "collapsed completely" after two laps. He was overtaken by Hamilton and Webber and his teammate caught up with him. However, there was no longer any overtaking maneuver within the team. Two laps before the end of the race, Raikkonen achieved the fastest race lap while in the lead. At the end of the field there was an overtaking maneuver by Chilton against van der Garde in the final phase.

Raikkonen finally won the season opener ahead of Alonso and Vettel. This meant that three Formula 1 world champions stood on the podium. Massa finished fourth, ahead of Hamilton, Webber, Sutil and di Resta. Last year's winner Button was ninth, Grosjean tenth. Best debutant was Gutiérrez in 13th place. All newcomers reached the goal at the season opener.

McLaren, who finished ninth (Button) and eleven (Pérez) in the race, had a poor start to the season compared to their performance in previous years. In the back field, Marussia managed to leave Caterham behind. Bianchi, who was the 15th best driver of the two rear teams, showed a dominant performance in the race within this group.

With his 20th victory, Raikkonen leads the world championship for the first time since May 2008. In addition, the number of wins he equaled with his compatriot Mika Häkkinen and is now the Finn with the most Formula 1 victories. Raikkonen himself described the race as one of the easier races he won. In the constructors' championship, the lead went to Ferrari ahead of Lotus-Renault and Red Bull-Renault .

With the 68th consecutive winless race, Massa became the first Ferrari driver to go over 67 Grand Prix without a win.

Comments from the first three drivers

“I am happy for the team and also for myself. We had a fast car all weekend and we didn't have any problems with it. Because of this, we could just focus on trying different things and getting the setup the way we wanted it.
I had a good feeling after practice that we would handle the tires well and the team got the strategy right. I made up a few positions at the start, then had a good fight with Lewis Hamilton. After that it was pretty simple, maybe one of my easier wins.
You can't start the season much better than winning the first race and of course we hope we can fight at the top of the championship. But there is still a long way to go and we have to keep putting pressure on him all the time. "

- Kimi Raikkonen

“We can say that we got off on the right foot this season. We fight with the best from the start. Together with the results of the winter test drives, this is a very encouraging sign that we have managed to make the most of a weekend that was full of unknown factors, both in qualifying and in the race.
I think the three pit stop strategy was the right one. Given the wear and tear we were dealing with, it would have been impossible to do less with one stop. By bringing the second stop a couple of laps forward, I was able to pass Vettel and Sutil.
Finishing ahead of Red Bull feels like a win, even when we know that despite today's race result, they are still the fastest.
Now we can expect another weekend with very changeable weather and, from a mechanical point of view, this also puts the cars and, from a physical point of view, the drivers under a lot of stress. But after this good result we can now take it easy. "

- Fernando Alonso

“I think you're always a little disappointed when you start first but don't finish first. Still, it was a good weekend overall for us. We had a good day today with pole and podium - but in the race we were a little too aggressive with our tires. The tires at the front and rear quickly dropped to their knees, the others managed that a little better.
There are always areas where you can improve, but the result we got today is okay. We didn't see Kimi on the track because he was just too fast and Fernando overtook us at a very vulnerable time. All in all, we can be satisfied with third place. "

- Sebastian Vettel
