Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the Japanese Grand Prix two weeks earlier also completed the season finale in Australia.
training
Nigel Mansell qualified for pole position from Ayrton Senna . Their respective teammates Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger followed in the second row, ahead of Michael Schumacher , Jean Alesi , Andrea de Cesaris and Martin Brundle .
run
While Mansell took the lead ahead of Senna, Pierluigi Martini , Olivier Grouillard and Michele Alboreto collided further down the field . Maurício Gugelmin , who was also easily involved in the accident, was initially able to continue the race. However, he had an accident a few laps later due to a brake failure, as a brake line had been damaged in the course of the collision.
On lap 19, Mansell slowed suddenly. Senna, who did not expect this and did not react quickly enough, crashed into the rear of his competitor and later accused him of intent after both were eliminated. Patrese and Berger then dueled for the lead until Berger fell back to third place behind Schumacher after a pit stop on lap 34. When the latter also stopped a little later, the two of them swapped positions again. Patrese, who planned to complete the race without changing tires in the meantime, retired after 50 laps due to an engine failure.
Berger won ahead of Schumacher, Brundle and Alesi. With Thierry Boutsen and Stefano Modena in fifth and sixth, two drivers scored their first and therefore only championship points of the year in the last race of the season.
