Reports
background
For the first time since 1985 a Grand Prix was held in South Africa. The Kyalami race track had since been largely rebuilt.
During the winter break, Pirelli announced that it would no longer produce tires for Formula 1 due to economic difficulties. So Goodyear became the sole supplier.
The teams McLaren , Williams , Lotus and Ligier each started the new season with the driver pairings with which they had ended the previous one. The Scuderia Ferrari kept Jean Alesi and hired Ivan Capelli as a replacement for Alain Prost , who at the end of the 1991 season had been banned from further participation in Formula 1 races for Ferrari and who, not least because of a still valid Ferrari contract with the corresponding Pay against participation in the 1992 season in a different team.
Michael Schumacher's new teammate at Benetton was Martin Brundle . Nelson Piquet ended his Formula 1 career. Footwork engaged Aguri Suzuki alongside Michele Alboreto and from then on competed with Mugen-Honda units. Tyrrell repositioned itself with Olivier Grouillard and Andrea de Cesaris and engines from Ilmor , as did Brabham with Eric van de Poele , the debutante Giovanna Amati and engines from the manufacturer Judd . At Jordan , Stefano Modena and Maurício Gugelmin were appointed to both cockpits and a new engine supplier, Yamaha, was chosen.
The Fondmetal team expanded its involvement with a second car and filled it with Formula 1 newcomer Andrea Chiesa . Pierluigi Martini moved from Minardi to Scuderia Italia and became JJ Lehto's new team-mate . The released Minardi cockpit was taken by Formula 1 debutant Christian Fittipaldi .
After Lola could not agree on a further collaboration beyond 1991, Larrousse signed a contract with the sports car manufacturer Venturi to develop a Formula 1 racing car . Bertrand Gachot was retained as the driver. The debutant Ukyō Katayama was hired for the second cockpit . The March team , which was suffering from serious financial problems , had Karl Wendlinger, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz , and newcomer Paul Belmondo compete as paydrivers . The interim team name Leyton House has been replaced by the original name.
AGS and Coloni had already withdrawn from Formula 1 shortly before the end of the 1991 season, and the Modena team also decided to leave after the end of the season. Andrea Moda Formula was re-established on the basis of the Coloni team . The team wanted to start the season with a modified Coloni C4B , but was excluded from the race weekend because they refused to pay an entry fee to FISA .
training
As usual, a maximum of 30 vehicles were allowed to participate in the regular training units. Since this number was not exceeded due to the exclusion of Andrea Moda, a pre-qualification was not necessary.
With a clear best time, Nigel Mansell qualified for pole position in front of reigning world champion Ayrton Senna and his teammate Gerhard Berger . Riccardo Patrese followed in fourth place in front of Jean Alesi, Michael Schumacher, Karl Wendlinger and Martin Brundle.
run
Shortly after the start, Patrese managed to overtake both Berger and Senna and, together with Mansell, create a one-two lead for Williams that lasted until the finish line. Shortly thereafter, Berger fell back to sixth place behind Alesi and Schumacher.
Alesi had to give up on lap 41 due to a problem with the oil supply. Mansell won ahead of Patrese, Senna, Schumacher and Berger. Johnny Herbert received the last world championship point of the day in sixth place.
