Reports

background

Both the reigning world champion Nigel Mansell and his teammate from the previous year, the reigning vice world champion Riccardo Patrese , left the Williams team. Mansell had already announced his exit from Formula 1 during the 1992 season and signed a contract with the Newman / Haas Racing team in the US Champ Car series. Patrese moved to Benetton and thus became Michael Schumacher's new teammate . During his break year, Alain Prost had negotiated a contract with Williams for the 1993 season, in which Ayrton Senna was explicitly excluded as a teammate. The team then hired Damon Hill , who had worked as a test driver for Williams in 1992, as the second driver alongside Prost. Since the starting number 1 traditionally belonged to the reigning world champion, but this was not represented in Formula 1 in 1993 due to Mansell's departure, Hill was assigned the number 0. Senna, who had also expressed interest in switching to Williams but could not do so due to the contract clause determined by Prost, stayed with McLaren reluctantly . He did not sign a one-year contract because he questioned the competitiveness of the team after Honda had left Formula 1 and switched to the engine supplier Ford-Cosworth . The debutant Michael Andretti was signed as a regular driver. The second cockpit was offered to Mika Häkkinen in the event that Ayrton Senna left the team . However, shortly before the start of the season, Senna signed a contract for his participation in the first race and wanted to decide for or against further assignments at short notice.

Gerhard Berger returned to Scuderia Ferrari and became a team mate of Jean Alesi . Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell formed the new driver pairing at Ligier . Mika Häkkinen's former place in Team Lotus at the side of Johnny Herbert has been filled with Alessandro Zanardi . Tyrrell extended the contract with Andrea de Cesaris , but replaced Olivier Grouillard by Ukyō Katayama . In addition, an engine contingent was taken over from Yamaha , which had become free through the move from Jordan to Hart . Ivan Capelli competed for Jordan alongside debutant Rubens Barrichello . Derek Warwick returned to Formula 1 and became Aguri Suzuki's new teammate at Footwork . Minardi continued to compete with Christian Fittipaldi , Fabrizio Barbazza was hired as the second driver.

The financially troubled March team signed drivers Jan Lammers and Jean-Marc Gounon , who both traveled to South Africa for the season opener. However, no engines were delivered due to outstanding payments. This meant the end of the traditional team that had been represented in the Formula 1 World Championship with a few interruptions since 1970 . The starting numbers 17 and 18 intended for the two vehicles were subsequently not awarded in the 1993 season. Michele Alboreto and the newcomer Luca Badoer started for BMS . The team, which did not build its own racing cars, switched from Dallara to Lola chassis. The Lola customer team from 1987 to 1991 , Larrousse , reported a further development of the Venturi chassis designed by Robin Herd under its own name and signed the pilots Érik Comas and Philippe Alliot .

With the support of Mercedes-Benz , Sauber was the only new team to enter Formula 1. The driver pairing was made up of JJ Lehto and Karl Wendlinger .

training

Alain Prost secured pole position in front of Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Jean Alesi, JJ Lehto, Riccardo Patrese and Mark Blundell.

run

Senna initially took the lead thanks to Prost's bad start. Hill also passed Prost at the start, but spun in the first corner and fell back to twelfth place. Schumacher also overtook Prost, whereupon he needed 13 laps to get past the German again to second place. A further twelve laps later he took the lead from Senna and from then on gained a large lead.

Schumacher retired on lap 40 after a failed attempt to overtake Senna. Patrese, who came in third as a result, also spun six laps later. Despite a short, heavy rain shower towards the end of the race, there was no further position shift at the front, so that Alain Prost won ahead of Ayrton Senna and Mark Blundell. Christian Fittipaldi, JJ Lehto and Gerhard Berger reached places four to six.
