Reports
background
During the five-week break between the second and third World Championship rounds of the year, the ATS Racing Team had completed a first copy of the new D4 model . The car was driven by Marc Surer . At Tyrrell also a new vehicle came to be called Tyrrell 010 used. There was already a copy of this model for both factory drivers.
At Shadow , Stefan Johansson was replaced by Geoff Lees after two unsuccessful qualification attempts in Argentina and Brazil .
training
The two Renault drivers Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux formed the front row in front of Nelson Piquet and Jacques Laffite . This was followed by Didier Pironi and Carlos Reutemann .
Marc Surer had a serious accident during training, had to be cut out of his destroyed vehicle and suffered leg injuries. Regardless of this, Alain Prost also had an accident and had to refrain from participating in the race.
run
While Jabouille and Arnoux were able to pull away slightly, Alan Jones , Jacques Laffite, Carlos Reutemann, Nelson Piquet and Gilles Villeneuve fought for second place behind them . During the first laps, Jody Scheckter also intervened in the action by overtaking Villeneuve and Piquet.
While Villeneuve fell far behind with a pit stop, Jones was overtaken by Laffite. Due to engine problems, Scheckter, the second Ferrari driver, also fell behind hopelessly from the twelfth lap and finally dropped out completely on the 15th lap.
Jones had to retire on lap 35 due to a gearbox failure. Jean-Pierre Jarier , who had meanwhile finished fifth, fell behind Piquet and Pironi from the 55th lap.
Jabouille, who had been in the lead until then, retired on lap 62 due to a puncture. Nevertheless, there was a triple French victory with Arnoux ahead of Laffite and Pironi. The last time three compatriots had such a success was the 1968 US Grand Prix , when three Britons, Jackie Stewart , Graham Hill and John Surtees , stood on the podium at the same time. However, this was surpassed by the fact that this time the first three places for the constructors were achieved exclusively by French teams, as well as the pole position and the fastest race lap.
