The 1980 US Grand Prix took place in Long Beach on March 30th and was the fourth race of the 1980 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
At the end of March 1980, the sixth Grand Prix of Long Beach took place. Alain Prost and Marc Surer were absent due to injuries sustained during practice for the South African Grand Prix earlier this month . Prost was represented at McLaren by Grand Prix newcomer Stephen South , who thus made his first and only Formula 1 appearance. The ATS Racing Team , on the other hand, waived the obligation of a substitute driver for Surer.
training
Brabham driver Nelson Piquet secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career with a lap time that was almost a second shorter than René Arnoux in Renault and Alfa Romeo factory driver Patrick Depailler . However, Jan Lammers created the real sensation of the training by qualifying for fourth place on the grid with the new ATS D4 . Williams driver Alan Jones finished fifth alongside Bruno Giacomelli in the second Alfa Romeo 179 , which also appeared to be very competitive on the Long Beach street circuit.
In addition to the debutant Stephen South, both Shadow pilots failed to qualify, which caused the already financially very troubled team to plunge deeper and deeper into the crisis.
run
Piquet defended his top position throughout the race, also drove the fastest race lap and thus achieved his first victory directly in the form of a Grand Slam .
In the first lap, Mario Andretti and Jean-Pierre Jarier collided . Ricardo Zunino was also involved in this accident . Only Jarier was initially able to continue the race. Jan Lammers, on the other hand, had to give up due to damage to the drive shaft. Thus three of the 24 participants were eliminated in the first round.
In the fourth lap, several pilots were involved in an accident caused by Bruno Giacomelli spinning. The race was over for Jean-Pierre Jarier and Carlos Reutemann as well as for Elio de Angelis , who broke an ankle.
Piquet led before Depailler, Jones, Arnoux and Patrese. From the 14th lap, Gilles Villeneuve took fourth place after overtaking Arnoux and Patrese. On lap 18, Jones took second place from Depailler.
Between the 40th and 47th laps, Depailler, Villeneuve and Jones, three pilots in promising positions were eliminated. Riccardo Patrese came second ahead of René Arnoux and Clay Regazzoni . He fell victim to a broken brake pedal on lap 51. As a result, his Ensign crashed almost unchecked into Ricardo Zunino's Brabham parked at the edge of the track. In the accident, the Swiss suffered such serious injuries that paraplegia was the result.
Nelson Piquet won ahead of the impressive Riccardo Patrese and Emerson Fittipaldi , who started the race from 24th and last place. The remaining World Championship points went to John Watson , Jody Scheckter and Didier Pironi .
