background
After the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 13 points ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay and with 17 points ahead of Hélio Castroneves .
The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach started in 2014 with a standing start. It was the first standing start of the season and the first in Long Beach since 2008 .
Oriol Servià returned to the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing . His last assignment was for Panther Racing at the MAVTV 500 in 2013 . Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing fielded a second vehicle with Servià as driver for four races in 2014. The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was the first of these.
With Sébastien Bourdais (three times), Power (twice), Juan Pablo Montoya , Castroneves, Hunter-Reay, Mike Conway and Takuma Satō (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first practice session, James Hinchcliffe was the fastest. Castroneves finished second, Justin Wilson third. Hinchcliffe would have topped the ranking with his second best time. Training was interrupted once by Josef Newgarden after an accident at Turn 8 . Newgarden was the leader at the time. At the end of the training session, this time was enough for fifth place. In the second training session, Simon Pagenaud took the lead in front of his compatriot Bourdais and Jack Hawksworth . Montoya made it into the top 10 in ninth place for the first time after his return in an IndyCar training session.
In the third, Power set the fastest time ahead of Newgarden and Hinchcliffe. Newgarden's gap to Power was only 2.2 thousandths of a second.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Satō, who was in the first group, the two fastest laps were canceled due to a disability from Hunter-Reay. Bourdais set the fastest lap in the first group, while Carlos Muñoz was the fastest driver in the second group .
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Bourdais posted the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Pagenaud, Newgarden, Hunter-Reay, Hawksworth and Hinchcliffe made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
Hunter-Reay ended up setting the fastest time and taking pole position ahead of Hinchcliffe and Bourdais.
Final training
In the final training, Newgarden was ahead. Bourdais finished second, Hunter-Reay third. The final training session was interrupted once because of a cone on the track.
run
Hunter-Reay won the standing start ahead of Bourdais, Pagenaud and Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe made up one of the lost positions in the opening laps and finished in third place, while his teammate Hunter-Reay maintained the lead and increased his lead over Bourdais. In the initial phase there was a contact between Marco Andretti and Satō, in which both suffered damage, through which Satō finally fell out of the leadership lap.
After some drivers had already preferred their first stop, the top completed their stops as planned. Hunter-Reay stayed out longer than his direct opponents and briefly lost the lead to Scott Dixon . Shortly after Hunter-Reay pitted, Bourdais hit the tire wall at corner eight and damaged his front wing in the process. He resumed the race. The accident triggered a yellow phase in which everyone who had not yet pitted completed their stop, so that Hunter-Reay was back in the lead. He led before Pagenaud, Hinchcliffe, Newgarden, Power, Castroneves, and Charlie Kimball . The first four drivers rode on the harder Blacks compound , the other three riders on the softer Reds compound . In the first yellow phase, Ryan Briscoe parked his car in the pits with an engine problem. He later resumed the race and finally crossed the finish line 20 laps behind. Bourdais drove to the pits for repairs with the pit lane closed and was subsequently given a drive-through penalty.
At the restart, Hunter-Reay kept the lead. Hinchcliffe moved up to second, Newgarden to third. There were two incidents in the field that did not trigger a caution period. Graham Rahal turned Wilson around, Power touched Pagenaud, who then slipped on corner six. While Rahal was given a drive-through penalty, Power received no penalty. After the race, Power confessed that he couldn't understand why he wasn't punished.
In the 40th round Bourdais triggered another yellow phase. Again he ran into a pile of tires. This time in the tenth corner. He resumed the race. In the yellow phase, Kimball retired with engine failure. The following restart was uneventful apart from one overtaking maneuver in midfield.
The final pit stop phase began on the 52nd lap. All drivers who stopped now were able to finish the race. In the 55th lap, Hunter-Reay pitted at the same time as his teammate Hinchcliffe and passed the lead to Newgarden. Newgarden followed a lap later, so that Sebastian Saavedra took the lead. Newgarden came out of the box before Hunter-Reay. Hunter-Reay attacked him immediately. In the fourth corner he tried a daring overtaking maneuver, in which he drove next to Newgarden and touched him. Both drivers slipped into the wall. In contrast to Power, Hinchcliffe was no longer able to evade, so the route was blocked. Hawksworth, Satō, Tony Kanaan and Castroneves drove into the scene of the accident, so that the route was blocked. A yellow phase was triggered. Satō, Hinchcliffe, Hunter-Reay, Newgarden and Kanaan were no longer able to take up the race again and were eliminated. Andretti Autosport lost two vehicles that had previously dominated the race with Newgarden.
After Saavedra also pitted, Dixon led in front of Wilson, who had to pit again. Power was third ahead of Conway, Muñoz and Montoya. At the restart, Conway passed Power. Wilson dropped out after colliding with Dixon. Rahal spun three laps after the restart so that another yellow phase was triggered. Rahal was eliminated from the incident.
At the restart, Dixon kept the lead. He was told by the pit that he was missing fuel for half a lap. Dixon kept Conway behind, but pitted for a brief stop with three laps to go.
Conway, who started the Grand Prix from 17th on the grid, won the race ahead of Power and Muñoz. It was Ed Carpenter Racing's first win on a street circuit and Conway's second at Long Beach. Ed Carpenter , racing team owner and team boss, had previously decided against further assignments on street courses and signed Conway for this profession. Montoya reached fourth place, making it into the top 5 for the first time after a comeback. Pagenaud was fifth, Mikhail Aleshin achieved sixth place, his best IndyCar result to date. Servià, Andretti, Saavedra and Carlos Huertas , who reached the top 10 for the first time, completed the top 10.
Power extended his lead in the drivers' championship. Conway, who does not compete on the ovals, took second place. Pagenaud was in third place.
After the race, two drivers were penalized. Saavedra drove too fast under yellow flags on lap 55. The race organizers took him to a fine of 10,000 US dollars . In addition, a suspended sentence was imposed for the next three events. A suspended sentence was pronounced against Castroneves until June 30, 2014, because he had criticized the race management via Twitter for not punishing Powers after the race . Castroneves stated that his sister wrote the tweet from his official account.
Hinchcliffe and Saavedra suffered minor injuries during the race. Both could take part in the next event.
