Ed Carpenter
Ed Carpenter (born March 3, 1981 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American racing driver . He has been driving in the IndyCar Series since 2003 . In 2012, he joined the series as team principal with the Ed Carpenter Racing team and continued to work as a driver.
He is the stepson of Tony George , an owner of the IndyCar Series.
Career
Carpenter began his motorsport career in 1989 in midget car racing, in which he was active until 2000. In 2000 and 2001 he was also active in the Silver Crown Series. In 2002 he moved to the IRL Infiniti Pro Series . With three podium finishes, he finished his first season in third place overall. In 2003 he stayed initially in the IRL Infiniti Pro Series and was again third in the overall standings with a win.
At the end of the 2003 season he made his debut in the IndyCar Series starting at the last three races for PDM Racing . At the end of the season he finished 27th overall. In 2004 he switched completely to the IndyCar Series. As a teammate of Alex Barron , he started for Cheever Racing . Carpenter couldn't keep up with his teammate and eighth place remained his best result. In the overall ranking he was 16.
In 2005 , Tony George , his stepfather, founded Team Vision Racing and signed Carpenter as a pilot for the season. With a tenth place as the best result, he was 18th in the drivers' championship. He also returned to the IRL Infiniti Pro Series for a race. At the start of the 2006 season in Homestead , Carpenter lost control of his vehicle after a tire damage and hit the track barrier. As he turned back onto the track, Paul Dana drove into his car. Both drivers were immediately taken to the hospital. Dana was fatally injured in the accident. Carpenter had to sit out two races due to his injuries. In the last race of the season he achieved his best result in the series with a fifth place and ended the season in 14th place overall. With his teammate, Tomas Scheckter , he did not keep up again this season. In 2007 Vision Racing entered with three cars and Carpenter and Scheckter were joined by AJ Foyt IV . With a few placements among the top ten drivers, he finished 15th overall behind Scheckter and Foyt at the end of the season.
In 2008 Carpenter repeated his best IndyCar placement to date, a fifth place, twice. He finished the season ahead of his teammate Foyt in 15th place in the overall standings. In addition, Carpenter took part in each of the races in the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2007 and 2008 . In 2009 he achieved his best-ever placement in the IndyCar Series with a second place at Kentucky Speedway . He also achieved his best result in the overall ranking with twelfth place. In 2010 Carpenter lost his IndyCar cockpit because Vision Racing had ceased racing. He was then given a cockpit by Panther Racing for four IndyCar races in the 2010 season. The Carpenter achieved the first pole position of his IndyCar career at Kentucky Speedway and just barely missed his first victory as second in the race. At the end of the season he finished 28th overall. For the 2011 season Carpenter was signed by Sarah Fisher Racing . He participated in ten out of seventeen events. His first race of the season was the Indianapolis 500 . At Kentucky Speedway, Carpenter scored his first IndyCar win in his 113th race. He drove the final laps alongside Dario Franchitti and finally crossed the finish line with a margin of 0.0098 seconds. Before that, he had to do a few laps with one hand because his visor was loose and he had to hold it tight. At the end of the season he was 26th overall.
In 2012 Carpenter started his own racing team, Ed Carpenter Racing, in the IndyCar Series. He contested the entire season as a driver for the team. Carpenter received support in founding the racing team from the vodka brand Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka , which is owned by the US professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller . Carpenter has been sponsored by this brand since 2010. At the Indianapolis 500 he spun in the lead group in the final phase and crossed the finish line one lap behind. After Carpenter had only finished in the top 10 in two oval races before the last race of the season, the MAVTV 500 , he won the season and achieved his second IndyCar victory. He finished the season in 18th place. In 2013 Carpenter stayed active in the IndyCar Series with his own racing team. At the Indianapolis 500 , he achieved pole position and the most laps in the lead. He finished in tenth place. In the oval races in Fort Worth and Newton , he was fourth. In the last race of the season, the MAVTV 500 , he finished in second place and achieved his only podium finish of the season. While Carpenter made it into the top 10 five times in six races on the oval courses, his best place on the street courses was a 13th place in Toronto . In the overall standings, he improved to 16th place.
In 2014 Carpenter decided not to compete on street courses and only to drive on oval courses. Mike Conway , who had ruled out further starts on oval courses in 2012, took over his cockpit on the street courses. Carpenter again achieved pole position at the Indianapolis 500 . He retired from the race after a collision. At the next oval race in Fort Worth he decided the race for himself and in Fontana he was third. Carpenter finished the season in 22nd place in the drivers' standings. Conway won two street course races, so both drivers together would have finished eighth overall. In 2015 , Carpenter merged his racing team with Fisher Hartman Racing to form CFH Racing . He remained active as a driver and shared the cockpit with Luca Filippi this season . Carpenter completes all six oval races. He was eliminated in four races and a sixth place in Newton was his best result. For the IndyCar Series 2016 , Sarah Fisher and Wink Hartman withdrew from the joint racing team, so that Carpenter continued the team under the name Ed Carpenter Racing . Like him last year, he took part in the oval races. He only crossed the finish line once. His best results were two 18th places. In 2018 he started from pole position at the Indianapolis 500 and led most of the laps. He finished the race second.
