Reports
background
After the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma , Will Power led the drivers' standings by 51 points over Hélio Castroneves and 81 points over Simon Pagenaud . With Power's start to the race, only Castroneves and Pagenaud next to him had a chance for the title.
There was a change in the starting field. There was a driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Ed Carpenter , who competed in all oval races, replaced Mike Conway , who only drove the street course races.
The MAVTV 500 2014 was the last race in which all cars were equipped with a Dallara AeroKit. All training sessions took place on Friday, the race on Saturday.
In the week before the race, there was a test day on the track on Wednesday. Here was Scott Dixon the fastest driver.
With Carpenter and Power (one each), two former winners competed in this race.
training
In practice, Power set the fastest time ahead of Castroneves and Carpenter. Only two drivers with Honda engines made it into the top 10.
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. The starting order for the individual time trial was drawn. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Castroneves was the last driver to take to the track and achieved pole position ahead of his teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Josef Newgarden . With his 41st IndyCar pole, Castroneves drew level with Rick Mears in fourth place in the all-time leaderboard . Championship leader Power was only 21. Power complained about oversteer and said his qualifying laps were very bad.
Final training
The final training took place on the Friday after qualifying. It was overshadowed by a serious accident involving Mikhail Aleshin . Aleshin spun, was hit by Charlie Kimball and catapulted into the safety fence. Even Marco Andretti was involved in the collision. While Andretti and Kimball were uninjured, Aleshin was seriously injured. He suffered broken bones in his ribs and right collarbone , a concussion, and chest injuries. His condition after the accident was serious but stable. Alyoshin stayed in the hospital for two and a half weeks. He did not retain permanent damage. The training was canceled after the accident. Kimball switched to the replacement car for the race.
Ryan Briscoe was fastest in training ahead of Dixon and Power.
run
At the start, Montoya took the lead for the first lap from Castroneves, who then led to the fifth lap before being overtaken by Montoya again. Montoya was in the lead until his first pit stop. Carlos Huertas gave up the race shortly after the start. In the early stages, Pagenaud built several laps back due to technical problems, while Montoya, Dixon and Castroneves took the lead. Montoya stopped after the 33rd lap. Due to pit stops, Dixon, Castroneves and Andretti briefly led the race before Montoya took the lead again.
There was a change in lead on lap 57 after James Hinchcliffe overtook Montoya. Montoya finally preferred his second stop because of handling problems. Hinchcliffe led the race until the 73rd lap and then handed over to Montoya again, who then led Castroneves, Carpenter, Dixon and Ryan Hunter-Reay . Meanwhile, Power had improved into the top 10. In the 100th lap, Montoya pitted again, so Carpenter and Hunter-Reay briefly took the lead. After their stops, Montoya was back in front. Carpenter received a drive-through penalty for being too quick in the pits.
In the 120th lap there was another change at the top. Hunter-Reay passed Montoya after driving past Castroneves. Hunter-Reay pulled away from the rest of the field in the following laps. In the next pit stop phase, Dixon briefly took the lead and finally passed it on to Castroneves. Hinchcliffe drove too fast in the pit lane and received a drive-through penalty. Castroneves sat down in front. He was ahead of Kanaan, Hunter-Reay, Dixon, Montoya and Power.
In the 175th lap, Hunter-Reay triggered the only yellow phase with a spin. He spun onto the green, didn't hit anywhere, and finally resumed the race. Bourdais passed under yellow and received a 30-second penalty. The track was cleaned in the yellow phase. The top went to a pit stop. Kanaan then led Dixon, Castroneves, Montoya, Power and Carpenter. After the restart, Power made up a few positions and took the lead after three laps. He stayed seven laps ahead before Kanaan took the lead again. Power dropped to fourth place behind Dixon and Carpenter.
During the final pit stop, Kanaan stopped so that he remained in the lead throughout. During the pit stop, Castroneves crossed the boundary line at the entrance and Hunter-Reay the line at the exit. Both received a drive-through penalty. Both lost a lap, so Castroneves had little chance of winning the title at this point. As a result, Power took a more conservative approach and lost a few positions.
Kanaan eventually won his first race for Ganassi ahead of teammates Dixon and Carpenter. Montoya finished fourth and Hinchcliffe fifth. The top 10 were completed by Takuma Satō , Briscoe, Carlos Muñoz , Power and Newgarden.
Power reached his first IndyCar championship ahead of Castroneves, who was second overall for the fourth time. Dixon finished third overall.
