The Honda Indy Toronto 2014 took place on July 20th in the Streets of Toronto in Toronto , Ontario , Canada and was the 13th and 14th races of the 2014 IndyCar Series .
Reports
background
After the Iowa Corn Indy 300 , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings by 9 points over Will Power and 32 points over Ryan Hunter-Reay .
There were two changes in the starting field. There was a planned driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Mike Conway , who competed in all street course races, replaced Ed Carpenter , who only drove the oval races. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing fielded a second vehicle for Luca Filippi .
The Honda Indy Toronto was the third and final two-race event this season. Originally, two races were planned - one on Saturday, one on Sunday - each with 85 laps and a separate qualification. However, as it rained heavily on Saturday, the first race was postponed to Sunday and the distance for both races was reduced by 20 laps to 65 laps. The qualifying for the second race was canceled and the starting grid was determined by the entrant points scoring before the event.
With Power, Scott Dixon (twice each), Sébastien Bourdais , Justin Wilson and Hunter-Reay (once each), five former winners competed in this race.
training
There were two training sessions of 45 minutes each on Friday.
In the first practice session, Josef Newgarden set the fastest time ahead of Power and James Hinchcliffe . The track conditions were perfect in sunny weather. The fastest times were achieved at the end of training. There was no interruption.
In the second practice session, Simon Pagenaud was the fastest. Castroneves finished second, Dixon third. The first five drivers were within a tenth of a second. Castroneves stopped in the eighth corner after half of the training session with battery problems, so training was interrupted. Shortly after the interruption, Ryan Briscoe turned , so that the training was interrupted again and prematurely ended.
Qualifying
The first section of the first qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Dixon drove the fastest lap, in the second group Castroneves was the fastest driver.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Castroneves posted the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Bourdais, Power, Tony Kanaan , Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six. Dixon brushed against the wall and bent the suspension so that he was the last of this group to reach twelfth starting position.
Bourdais ended up setting the fastest time, taking pole position from Power and Castroneves. It was Bourdai's first pole position in the IndyCar Series and his first IndyCar pole since the 2007 Bavaria Champ Car Grand Prix . With his 32nd IndyCar pole, he drew level with Michael Andretti in eighth place in the all-time best list . Pagenaud, who was finally fifth, had an accident on the last corner of his last fastest lap.
1st race
The standing start planned for the first race on Saturday was canceled due to wet track conditions. Several attempts were made to start the race behind the safety car. Even before the race was open, three drivers had problems behind the safety car, which led to a transfer to the end of the field. Briscoe spun, Power hit the track barrier and Juan Pablo Montoya suffered an electrical problem. After two and a half hours of waiting, the race was finally canceled without ever having started. During a red phase, a controversy arose at the pits, as the Penske race management allowed a repair of Powers vehicle. The race has been postponed to Sunday.
The race started after three laps behind the safety car. Bourdais kept the lead. There was a collision behind it. Filippi turned Pagenaud. In the resulting chaos, Newgarden, Conway, Takuma Satō and Carlos Muñoz were involved in the collision. The race was immediately interrupted with the red flag so that the vehicles could be recovered or restarted. Newgarden and Conway's vehicles were repaired during the interruption. Since Newgarden drove into the closed box, he received a drive-through penalty, which he withdrew after the restart. With the exception of Satō, who later drove a few more races, all drivers resumed the race behind the safety car. Bourdais led before Castroneves, Hunter-Reay, Kanaan and Filippi.
At the restart, Bourdais stayed in the lead. Hunter-Reay overtook Castroneves and took second position. Bourdais took the lead over the next few laps. In the 17th round there was the second and final caution phase. Carlos Huertas was in the tire wall, Filippi drove his damaged vehicle back into the pits and gave up. Huertas eventually resumed the race.
Bourdais stayed in the lead again at the restart. He pulled away again and sometimes drove 1.5 seconds faster than the opponents. After 33 laps he pitted, giving Castroneves, who had previously overtaken Hunter-Reay, the lead. A lap later he also stopped. Pagenaud, who had a different pit strategy and had been to the pit earlier, took the lead. From the 41st lap, Bourdais was back in front. In the meantime, there was contact between Hunter-Reay and Kanaan which resulted in Hunter-Reay's failure due to its suspension being damaged. There was no yellow phase. Bourdais controlled the race in the final third and stayed in the lead throughout. Shortly before the end there was a collision between Power and Newgarden, in which Newgarden was eliminated.
Bourdais eventually won the IndyCar Series for the first time. It was his first IndyCar win after the Gran Premio Tecate 2007 . With his 32nd IndyCar victory, he drew level with Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy in eighth place in the all-time best list . Castroneves finished second, Kanaan third and Pagenaud fourth. The first four were within ten seconds. Dixon, Graham Rahal , Charlie Kimball , Hinchcliffe, Power and Wilson completed the top 10.
2nd race
The second race started standing. Due to the threat of rain, the start was moved a few minutes forward. Castroneves kept the lead. Wilson stopped and Kanaan braked in the third corner, so there was a caution period. Kanaan admitted after the race that his accident was entirely his fault. Both drivers resumed the race. At the restart on the third lap, Castroneves stayed in front again. Pagenaud had problems with the electronics in the early stages, so he lost several laps.
On the twelfth lap, it started to rain lightly, making the track more slippery. Several drivers missed the braking point in the eighth corner. Montoya hit the tire wall and stopped. A little later, Hinchcliffe spun in the same place and lightly touched Montoya before pausing just behind it. Mikhail Aleshin , who was behind the two, also braked himself. He pulled into the back of Montoya's vehicle. As he did so, he lifted Montoya's car and slipped under it with his racing car. Montoya's vehicle had to be raised to retrieve Aleshin. Aleshin was able to get out of the car on his own and was unharmed. His helmet showed traces of the collision with Montoya's vehicle. Montoya and Hinchcliffe resumed the race and crossed the finish line several laps behind after repairs. Shortly before the safety car phase, Castroneves pitted to switch to rain tires, so that Power led for two laps. Power pitted in the safety car phase and handed the lead over to Newgarden, who like Bourdais stayed on slicks. Hunter-Reay and Jack Hawksworth changed tires with the pit lane closed and received a drive-through penalty.
After the restart, Newgarden held the lead briefly, but was eventually overtaken by Castroneves. He and Bourdais also switched to rain tires a little later because the track was too wet for slicks. Newgarden had previously spun without making contact with the wall. So all drivers drove on rain tires. In the next laps several drivers spun and braked due to the wet track. At the top Castroneves, Power, Kanaan and Dixon had separated. In the 24th lap there was another yellow phase, as debris was on the track.
At the restart the first four positions remained unchanged. Behind them Filippi went past Briscoe into fifth position. As the rain grew lighter and eventually stopped, Power put pressure on leading teammate Castroneves. On the 33rd lap, Filippi drove into the lane in the eighth corner, so that there was another yellow phase. It was already clear at this point that the planned distance of 65 laps could no longer be achieved and that the 80-minute time limit would be driven. Castroneves kept the lead again at the restart. In the following laps the racing line dried up. On the 41st lap, Power overtook Castroneves and took the lead.
On lap 43, Muñoz and Conway chose a risky strategy and switched to slicks. The track wasn't completely dry yet. Before his stop, however, Muñoz was already in 19th place and didn't have much to lose. Conway made the decision to switch himself as he found the track dry enough. One lap later, an accident by Sebastián Saavedra triggered another caution period. The leading drivers pitted immediately and also switched to slicks, so that Wilson, who did not stop, took the lead. He led in front of Newgarden, Huertas and Filippi. Conway was the best placed driver on slicks.
After the restart, Wilson was leading ahead of Newgarden, Conway and Kanaan. The last laps of the race were eventful. On lap 50, Conway took the lead and Bourdais had an accident but eventually drove on. One lap later, Kimball Huertas turned around, causing a traffic jam. Several drivers were involved in this incident. The race management decided to interrupt the race with the red flag. Muñoz was eliminated here, Rahal remained at another point with a gearbox damage. All other drivers eventually resumed the race.
Before the restart, which took place after one lap behind the safety car, Conway was in front of Wilson, Kanaan, Power and Newgarden. Except for Wilson and Newgarden, the drivers used slicks. When restarting, Castroneves damaged the front wing. Wilson lost a few positions at the top. Hawksworth improved from 15th to sixth in the last six laps.
After 56 laps, Conway finally won ahead of Kanaan and Power. Kimball was fourth, Satō fifth. Hawksworth, Dixon, Marco Andretti , Bourdais and Wilson completed the top 10. Conway's victory was the 250th for tire manufacturer Firestone , which fitted all vehicles with tires in the 2014 season.
In the drivers' championship, Castroneves expanded his lead over Power a little at this event. Hunter-Reay stayed in third place.
