Reports

background

After the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio , Will Power led the drivers' standings by four points over Hélio Castroneves and 63 points over Ryan Hunter-Reay .

There was a change in the starting field. There was a driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Ed Carpenter , who competed in all oval races, replaced Mike Conway , who only drove the street course races. This weekend it was announced that Ed Carpenter Racing will merge with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing to form CFH Racing for the next season .

With Tony Kanaan , Hunter-Reay (twice each), Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon (once each) four former winners competed in this race.

training

There were two one-hour training sessions on the Saturday before qualifying. In the first training session, James Hinchcliffe set the fastest time ahead of Briscoe and Hunter-Reay. The training was briefly interrupted in the final phase after Carlos Muñoz was rolled out. All rookies and drivers outside the top 10 of the Entrant classification received an additional set of tires in this training session.

In the second practice session, Hinchcliffe again set the fastest lap. Carpenter finished second, Kanaan third. After Hinchcliffe had set the fastest time, he lost control of his understeering car in the closing stages and drove into the wall of the second corner. The training was interrupted for the third time after the accident and extended by five minutes.

Qualifying

The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. The starting order for the individual time trial was drawn. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.

Power was the fastest, taking pole position ahead of Kanaan and his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya . With his 35th IndyCar pole position, Power took sixth place in the all-time best list.

run

Power maintained the lead at the start and kept it safely until the first stop on lap 58. Due to pit stops, Montoya and Carpenter briefly took the lead. Power then took first position again. During the stop, Montoya hit a tire provided for him, so the stop was delayed and he lost a position. He received a warning from the race management. After the first stop, Power, Kanaan, Briscoe, Montoya and Hunter-Reay were in the top five positions. Hunter-Reay started the race from 19th place and I worked forward in the first stint.

On the second set of tires, Power was put under great pressure by Kanaan and repeatedly defended the lead in direct duels on the outer lane of the third corner. Kanaan pitted a little earlier and drove fast laps. Power stopped on lap 121 and Kanaan took the lead ahead of Power and Briscoe. Hunter-Reay lost a few positions as his right rear wheel was having trouble changing tires.

On lap 131, Muñoz brushed the wall in the fourth corner and triggered a caution period. With the exception of Power, Josef Newgarden and Marco Andretti , all drivers pitted for the third time. When restarting on lap 140, Power kept the lead. Kanaan, who had dropped to fourth due to his stop, overtook Andretti and Newgarden on the first lap after the restart. On the 168th lap, Hunter-Reay suffered a damage to the rear left suspension due to a material defect. He drove to the pits and did not trigger a yellow phase.

Power began the final pit stop phase on lap 190. In the meantime, Montoya took the lead, then Power led ahead of Newgarden and Montoya. In lapping traffic, Montoya passed Newgarden into second position. Newgarden pitted again later.

Power eventually scored his first victory on a one-mile oval. He won in a convincing manner and led a total of 229 of 250 laps. Montoya finished second, ahead of Kanaan, Dixon and Newgarden. Briscoe, Simon Pagenaud , Mikhail Aleshin , Carpenter and Jack Hawksworth completed the top 10 . Castroneves reached eleventh place with handling problems. Except for the first seven drivers, all other participants had been lapped at least once.

Power extended the lead over Castroneves in the drivers' standings to 39 points. Pagenaud took over the third position from Hunter-Reay. In addition to the top four, only Montoya and Dixon had theoretical title chances after this race.
