Carlos Andrés Muñoz (born February 2, 1992 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian racing car driver . He competed in the IndyCar Series from 2013 to 2018 .

Career

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Muñoz began his career in karting , where he was active from 2002 to 2007. He also made his formula racing debut in the Formula TR Pro Series FR 1600 in 2007 and finished eighth overall with a podium finish. In 2008 the racing driver competed for the Prema Powerteam in both the Italian Formula Renault , in which he finished 16th overall, and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he remained without points. In 2009, Muñoz moved to Epsilon Euskadi , for whom he competed in the Western European Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. With a total of three podium finishes, he finished seventh overall in the Western European Formula Renault and eighth overall in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In both series he had to admit defeat to his teammate Albert Costa , who won both championship titles. He also took part in six races of the European F3 Open for Porteiro Motorsport and ended the season with two podium finishes in eleventh place in the overall standings.

In 2010 , Muñoz moved to Mücke Motorsport in the Formula 3 Euro Series . At the end of the season he finished ninth overall with a second place as the best result. He also made guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship and took part in two races of the European F3 Open. In 2011 , Muñoz started in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Signature . He finished the season in eighth place in the championship. In addition, Muñoz was entitled to points in the 2011 FIA Formula 3 Trophy . There he achieved sixth overall.

In 2012 , Muñoz left Europe and moved to North America to Andretti Autosport in Indy Lights . He won two races and finished on a podium in five races. At the end of the season he was fifth overall. In 2013 , Muñoz stayed with Andretti Autosport in Indy Lights. He won the races in Birmingham , Long Beach and Long Pond and Fontana . Although no other driver had achieved more victories, he finished the season in third place. In addition, Muñoz made his debut for Andretti Autosport in 2013 in the IndyCar Series and took part in the Indianapolis 500 . In this race he qualified for second place on the grid. In the race he was twelve laps ahead and finished in second place as the best driver in his team. In the further course of the season he was used at Panther Racing as a substitute for the injured Ryan Briscoe and at Andretti Autosport as a substitute for the sick EJ Viso in one race each.

In 2014 , Muñoz received a full-time cockpit in the IndyCar Series at Andretti Autosport. The mission was supported by HVM Racing . In the second race of the season in Long Beach he was third on the podium. In Houston and Long Pond he finished second in other races. Muñoz was the best rookie and the second best Andretti driver. He finished the season in eighth place. In 2015 , Muñoz stayed with Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series. At the first race in Detroit , he achieved his first IndyCar victory. He finished the season as the worst Andretti full-time driver in 13th place overall. In 2016 , Muñoz completed another IndyCar season for Andretti. He achieved his best result at the Indianapolis 500 , where he finished second behind his teammate Alexander Rossi . As the best Andretti driver, Muñoz was tenth in the drivers' championship. In 2017 he joined AJ Foyt Enterprises . After a seventh place in the second race in Long Beach, there were five more places in the top ten. In the overall standings, he took 16th place. In 2018 he competed once again for Andretti Autosport in the Indianapolis 500 . He finished the race in seventh. In the last two races of the season he took over the cockpit of the injured Robert Wickens at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports .
