The Botanical Garden of Saarland University was founded in 1952 and closed in 2016. It was on the western edge of the Saarbrücken university campus .

history

The garden was founded in 1952.

The public greenhouse facility was completed in 1967. The area was last 2.5 hectares, the under-glass area 1,200 m², of which 800 m² were show houses.

The director's team included a gardening teacher as well as a senior gardener and a senior gardener. The garden housed around 2,000 plant taxa (species, varieties and sorts) from different climatic zones around the world. A medicinal plant museum was attached to the facility.

The tasks of the Botanical Garden consisted in the provision of plant material for university teaching and research as well as public educational work, especially for schools. A promotional group in the garden supported the public relations work.

The offer of the garden included an annual calendar of events as well as individually arranged group tours on different topics.

The garden was closed by decision of the Saarland state government. The reason was austerity measures. The closure was criticized as a loss of important cultural assets and educational content. The closing date was brought forward from the end of 2016 to April 1, 2016. Since the theft of plants had increased after the April date had been announced, the garden was no longer accessible to the public from March 22, 2016, apart from the agreed tours.
