history

Steam locomotive memorial

On September 14, 1860, the Pskow –Vilnius section of the Warsaw-Petersburg Railway was opened. The train station in Naujoji Vilnia was built later when the settlement was emerging and mainly railway workers were settling in the area. The settlement itself grew into the third Lithuanian industrial city in the 1930s.

Between 1940 and 1941, numerous residents of Naujoji Vilnia were deported to Siberia as a result of the annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union . On the occasion of this event, a memorial service for the victims is held every year on June 14, 2009. The 2009 celebration took place under the motto Vilties paukštė ( Honnungsvogel ).
