Reports
background
After the Honda Indy Toronto , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 29 points on Scott Dixon and 69 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .
At the 2013 Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, drivers were allowed a total of 170 seconds to use the push-to-pass button. The overtaking aid could be activated ten times during the race.
Before the race, there were three rule changes that went into effect on this Indy:
- In the event of a restart within the last 15 laps of a race, all drivers lapped will be ordered to the end of the field.
- If a penalty can no longer be served during a race, the race result will be declared provisional and the penalty will be reviewed. This procedure is independent of the technical acceptance of the vehicles.
- If a vehicle suffers tire damage when it is touched, the driver no longer has to use this tire compound, even if it has not been used the required minimum number of two laps.
There was an optional change to the vehicles for this race. The tie rod levers, which are usually made of steel, could now also be made of aluminum. This was hoped to reduce the number of hand injuries.
There were three changes in the starting field. Oriol Servià returned to Panther Racing and was registered for the number 4 car for the third time after the Firestone 550 and the Iowa Corn Indy 250 . He represented Ryan Briscoe , who had been out of action at the Honda Indy Toronto after a hand injury. At Dale Coyne Racing , Mike Conway was replaced by James Davison . Davison was runner-up in the Indy Lights in 2009 and was then without a permanent commitment. Since then he has competed in individual sports car races and has also worked as a driving trainer for other IndyCar and Indy Lights drivers. Davison's debut was planned as a one-off appearance at Dale Coyne Racing in the 2013 season, but was used again in the next race. Davison's step-grandfather Tony Gaze died the week before the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio at the age of 93. As a further debutant, Luca Filippi received the vehicle from Bryan Herta Autosport , which Alex Tagliani had previously driven. Filippi had completed four GP2 races for Scuderia Coloni in 2012 and won one race.
With Dixon (four times), Castroneves (twice) and Dario Franchitti (once), three former winners competed for this Indy.
training
In the first practice session, the Ganassi pilots Dixon and Franchitti, who led the ranking, dominated. Hunter-Reay followed in third place, thirteenth of a second behind. In the second practice Will Power took the lead in front of Dixon and Hunter-Reay. The training was interrupted twice after the departure of James Hinchcliffe and Tony Kanaan . Debutant Filippi came in fifth. Takuma Satō and Justin Wilson occupied positions 22 and 24 with technical problems.
In the third practice session, Josef Newgarden set the fastest time and was ahead of three Andretti Autosport drivers . Marco Andretti , EJ Viso and James Hinchcliffe took positions two to four. The training was interrupted several times. Satō slipped in the second corner. Shortly after resuming training, Charlie Kimball had an accident in the first corner. He lost control of his racing car and hit the tire wall backwards. Kimball left the vehicle on his own. The tire stacks then had to be readjusted. Kimball switched to the replacement car for the rest of the weekend. Shortly before the end of the training session, Power also hit the tire wall on the first corner backwards. At around the same time, Hinchcliffe lost his front wing after a ride in the twelfth turn.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Franchitti set the fastest lap in the first group, while Hunter-Reay was the fastest driver in the second group. In the first group, Castroneves, the overall leader, failed to progress and was 15th in the qualifying classification. Davison's fastest lap was canceled due to avoidable contact with Ed Carpenter . In the second group there was a red flag that was triggered by a slip by Filippi in the twelfth corner. Due to the triggering of the interruption, the two fastest times were deleted so that he was last instead of jumping into the second section.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Andretti, Hunter-Reay, Dixon, Franchitti and Kimball made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six . Tristan Vautier , who finished eleventh, was thrown out in the closing stages. On the starting grid he was moved back ten starting positions due to an early engine change.
Hunter-Reay finally set the fastest time, taking pole position ahead of Power and Dixon.
Final training
In the final training, Wilson was the fastest driver ahead of Simona de Silvestro and Andretti.
run
Hunter-Reay kept the lead over Power and Dixon at the start. With the exception of Andretti, who started the race from fourth place, the drivers in the leading group used the softer tire compound in the first section. Despite the tougher mix, Andretti was one of the first drivers to enter the pit lane.
On lap 30, the first three of the race pitted. The internal order did not change, but Hunter-Reay, Power and Dixon had fallen behind Kimball, Hinchcliffe and Simon Pagenaud , who were more in the pits and, in contrast to the former, a three-stop strategy instead of a two-stop strategy used. Hunter-Reay, Power and Dixon were the only riders in the leading group who only wanted to stop twice.
In the 42nd round, Kimball pitted for the second time. In doing so, he fell behind Pagenaud, but stayed ahead of the three drivers who had led in the early stages. Kimball and Pagenaud had used the softer tire compound in their second stint and were faster than Hunter-Reay, Power and Dixon on the harder one. When Pagenaud pitted six laps later, he too stayed ahead of the former leading trio and took second place behind Kimball. A lap later, Dixon decided to switch to a three-stop strategy. He fell back into midfield and lost some time.
In the 60th lap, Hunter-Reay and Power pitted for the second and last time. While Power's stop went flawlessly, Hunter-Reay had parked too far away from the fuel system so that his stop was delayed. Kimball pitted five laps later, handing the lead back to Pagenaud. He now switched to the harder tire compound, which he had not used before but had to use in the race. At the same time, Kanaan parked his vehicle in a run-off zone and gave up with technical problems. Since his car was safely parked, there was no yellow phase.
Pagenaud stayed on the track longer than originally planned, as Kimball had difficulty lapping traffic and was stuck behind Viso. Pagenaud's wait seemed to be paying off at first, as he got back on track before Viso and Kimball. While Kimball came briefly off the track, Viso rounded back in the second corner so that the first two drivers were directly behind one another. Kimball slowed past the fourth corner and took the lead. He benefited from the fact that Pagenaud's tires did not yet have the necessary temperature. Kimball pulled away from the rest of the field in the following laps.
As in the previous year, the race ended without a single caution period. Kimball won ahead of Pagenaud and his teammate Franchitti. This meant that only Honda pilots were on the podium. It was Kimball's first IndyCar win. He became the fourth premiere winner of the season after Hinchcliffe, Satō and Pagenaud. Kimball scored more laps in the lead in this race than in his previous career. Power and Hunter-Reay followed in fourth and fifth. For a more successful performance with the two-stop strategy, both drivers would have needed caution phases. The top 10 completed Castroneves, Dixon, Wilson, Andretti and Hinchcliffe. The two debutants, Davison and Filippi, finished 15th and 16th. It was the first time Dixon had failed to finish in the top five in Mid-Ohio.
Kimball achieved his first victory in formula racing since 2006 in Zandvoort in the Formula 3 Euro Series . This was before Kimball got type 1 diabetes . In the meantime, Kimball won the Daytona 24-hour race in 2013, a sports car race with Juan Pablo Montoya , Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas . Kimball became the first IndyCar winner to develop type 1 diabetes.
Castroneves extended his lead over Dixon, his closest pursuer. Hunter-Reay stayed in third position, some way behind.
