The 2013 Honda Indy Toronto took place on July 13th and 14th in the Streets of Toronto in Toronto , Ontario , Canada and was the twelfth and thirteenth races of the 2013 IndyCar Series .
Reports
background
After the Pocono IndyCar 400 , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 23 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay and 55 points on Marco Andretti .
For the second time in the season after the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit 2013 , a so-called double header was held. Two races over the full distance were held on the race weekend. The first race of the Honda Indy Toronto was scheduled to have a standing start for the first time in the history of the IndyCar Series. As usual in IndyCar races, the vehicles will continue to be started in the pit lane. The drivers then complete a countdown lap and the formation lap (introductory lap ). The Safety Car drives in front of the field on both laps. After the end of the introductory lap, the drivers line up in the grid. As soon as all drivers have stopped, the race director sends a radio signal to all drivers that the start procedure has begun. Five seconds later, the start light is switched completely to red in six steps. Cancellation is possible until the traffic light is fully lit. As soon as all twelve signal lights are red, it takes 0.5 to 3 seconds for the traffic light to switch to green. Since the start had been canceled in the first race, the second race was also started standing.
In both races of the Honda Indy Toronto, the drivers were allowed a total of 170 seconds to use the push-to-pass button. The overtaking aid could be activated ten times during the race.
Race director Beaux Barfield was absent for personal reasons. Brian Barnhart took over his duties .
There were two changes in the starting field. Mike Conway returned to Dale Coyne Racing's # 18 car , replacing Pippa Mann . Conway was last active for the team at the Double Header in Detroit. The second change came during the weekend. After Ryan Briscoe was injured in the first race on Saturday and was retired for Sunday, he was replaced by Carlos Muñoz for the last day at Panther Racing . It was Muñoz's second IndyCar race after the 2013 Indianapolis 500 . He received clearance for the start from his racing team Andretti Autosport , for which he had taken part in the Indy Lights race on the track, the Toronto 100 , the day before . Muñoz finished fourth in the Toronto 100 and was the overall leader of the Indy Lights at the time.
With Dario Franchitti (three times), Will Power (twice), Sébastien Bourdais , Justin Wilson and Hunter-Reay (once each), five former winners competed in these Indys.
training
In practice, Hunter-Reay set the fastest lap ahead of Josef Newgarden and Briscoe. There have been several incidents. Franchitti destroyed the entire right side of the vehicle in an accident on the fifth corner. Castroneves damaged his front wing in a collision with power that landed in the tire piles once during this training session.
1. Qualifying
Qualifying for the first race took place according to the original format for street courses.
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group, Dixon drove the fastest lap, in the second group Franchitti was the fastest driver.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Franchitti achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Bourdais, Tony Kanaan , Dixon, Power and James Jakes made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six . Shortly before the time ran out, Takuma Satō hit the wall, preventing some drivers from improving their times. Hunter-Reay, who just missed out on the Firestone Fast Six in seventh place, was critical of Satō after qualifying, who had hit him in the rear of the previous week in the previous race.
Franchitti ended up setting the fastest time, taking the 32nd pole position of his career ahead of Bourdais and Power. Franchitti drew level with Michael Andretti and together with him finished sixth in the list of IndyCar pole setters. Franchitti had achieved his first pole position 16 years earlier in the same position. For the first time in the IndyCar Series, two four-time champions started from the front row. It was also Bourdai's first Top 2 starting position in the IndyCar Series. He was on pole position 31 times at the Champ Cars .
Jakes was moved ten positions back due to an early engine change.
2nd qualifying
The second qualifying was held in two groups. Each group had twelve minutes each. The first in each group received a bonus point for a pole position. The first place on the grid went to the faster of the two.
In the first group, Franchitti was fastest ahead of Hunter-Reay and Kanaan. In the second group, Dixon set the fastest lap ahead of Castroneves and Power. Dixon was absolutely the fastest pilot and thus got the first place on the grid. For the first time since Cafés do Brasil Indy 300 2010 , two Ganassi pilots started from the front row. Franchitti said after qualifying that he had expected that faster times would be possible in the second group because there was more rubber on the track. All drivers in the second group were sorted into the odd starting positions based on the qualifying order. The drivers of the first group got the even starting positions.
There was a turbulent final phase in the second group. Power brushed a gang, releasing an advertising banner that wrapped itself around the front wing of Bourdais. Shortly before the end, an accident triggered Jake's red flags, so that time improvements were no longer possible in the end.
1st race
The first standing start of the IndyCar Series was canceled after Newgarden stalled his engine. The race was started under yellow flags and released on the fourth lap. Newgarden was 51 laps behind in the race, but crossed the line.
Franchitti led the race until lap 21, when he was overtaken by Bourdais. In the Bourdais overtaking maneuver, Power also passed Franchitti into second position. Dixon was behind the first three pilots. Bourdais was on a different tire strategy than his opponents. This gave him advantages in the initial phase, but also disadvantages in the final phase.
After Charlie Kimball was in the lead for two laps, Power led the race in the second third of the race for 29 laps in a row. While Power was in the lead, Satō fell out with technical problems. There was also a collision between Graham Rahal and Tristan Vautier in the fourth corner, which triggered a caution phase. Both pilots resumed the race.
Power lost the lead after the 60th lap to Dixon, who alternated with Bourdais in first position for the rest of the race. On the 65th lap there was a collision between Briscoe, Wilson and Kimball, which triggered a yellow phase. Wilson had touched Kimball and spun it, dodging the outside lane and touching Briscoe. While Wilson stayed in the leading lap, Briscoe was eliminated with a hand injury and Kimball resigned after a few more laps. Briscoe broke his right wrist in the accident and was out for a month as a result. Briscoe was operated on shortly after the accident.
After the restart, Bourdais took the lead until he was overtaken by Dixon on lap 78. Bourdais struggled with the degradation of his tires in the closing stages. Hunter-Reay hit the tires a little later, but did not trigger a yellow phase and also reached the goal. He was in a duel with his teammate EJ Viso . Hunter-Reay had previously stalled the engine during his two pit stops. In the 82nd there was another caution period when Alex Tagliani had turned in the first corner. Dixon kept the lead at the restart.
In the final phase there was a duel between Franchitti and Power, in which Power collided with Franchitti. Franchitti was initially given a time penalty for handicap. However, after the race control had evaluated the footage and questioned Franchitti, they withdrew the penalty as it was a racing incident. Power was eliminated.
Dixon eventually won his second race of the season in a row ahead of Bourdais and his teammate Franchitti. Bourdai's trophy broke at the podium ceremony after dropping those traps. Bourdais achieved his best placement in the IndyCar Series. Dixon scored his 31st IndyCar win, drawing level with Bourdais and Franchitti, who had also won 31st IndyCar races. Together with the no longer active Paul Tracy , the three took seventh place in the statistics of the IndyCar winners. These four drivers were also the best non-Americans in this statistic at the time, and Bourdais, Dixon and Franchitti were the most successful active IndyCar drivers after victories.
The top 10 were completed by Andretti, Kanaan, Castroneves, Conway, James Hinchcliffe , Simon Pagenaud and Simona de Silvestro .
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday, Muñoz came into action in the Panther vehicle with the # 4 and replaced the injured Briscoe. He finished 23rd in training on his first run for Panthers. Castroneves drove the fastest lap ahead of Ganassi drivers Dixon and Franchitti.
2nd race
The second race saw the first standing start in the history of the IndyCar Series. Hinchcliffe had problems with the accelerator before the start and therefore followed the field. Ed Carpenter stopped at the start, but was restarted in time, so that the safety car did not come out on the track. Pole setter Dixon kept the lead at the start. His team-mate Franchitti damaged his front wing when it came into contact with power on the first lap. As a result, Franchitti had to pits to stop repairs.
Dixon led the race until lap 23 and then gave the lead to Penske drivers Castroneves and Power for two laps each after his first pit stop . After completing the first pit stops, Dixon led the race again.
After 35 laps the race was over for Kanaan. He was eliminated because of a wall contact. However, there was no yellow phase. The first caution phase of the race finally occurred on lap 65 when Jakes hit the boundary in the fifth corner. Dixon, who was up to 16 seconds ahead before the caution, kept the lead at the restart and benefited from the fact that lapped drivers were right behind him.
There was another yellow phase in the 81st round. This time it was triggered by an accident by Carpenter - also in the fifth corner. When restarting there was a collision in the front field: Power lost control of his vehicle in the fight for third position and collided with Hunter-Reay. Before that, Bourdais passed him by. Satō touched another enemy and was no longer able to dodge Hunter-Reay. He was eliminated like Power and Hunter-Reay. The race was neutralized again and no longer released.
Dixon won the race ahead of Castroneves and Bourdais. Dixon won for the third time in seven days. Dixon scored his 32nd IndyCar win, making him the only seventh in the all-time list of IndyCar winners. In addition, with the win he became the most successful non-US-American to date after victories and the most successful active driver after victories. Since succeeded Dixon to win races Toronto both, he received an additional premium in the amount of 100,000 US dollars .
The top 10 completed Franchitti, Viso, Kimball, Conway, Wilson, Andretti and Tagliani. Conway had made up 16 positions in the race.
Castroneves retained the lead in the drivers' championship. Dixon improved from fourth to second place. Hunter-Reay dropped to third place overall.
