Reports
background
After the Milwaukee IndyFest , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 16 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay and 50 points on Marco Andretti .
Oriol Servià replaced Ryan Briscoe as the pilot of the number 4 vehicle from Panther Racing . Briscoe took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race that weekend and was therefore unable to do so. Servià was last in action for Panther Racing in the penultimate race.
With Dario Franchitti (twice), Tony Kanaan , Andretti and Hunter-Reay (once each) four former winners competed in this Indy.
training
In practice, Kanaan was the fastest driver ahead of Will Power and Andretti.
Qualifying
The qualifying mode for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 did not correspond to the classic time training on oval courses . First there was an individual time trial over one lap. Then three so-called heat races over 50 laps were held. The best six drivers in the individual time trial qualified for the third heat race. The remaining 18 pilots were divided into the first two heat races. The two best drivers of each of the first two heat races qualified for the third heat. In the third heat race, the first ten positions were awarded, the third to ninth placed drivers of the first two heat races were then alternately lined up: the drivers of the first heat race were given the even positions, the drivers of the second heat race the odd positions. The first twelve drivers received bonus points for the qualifying result.
In the individual time trial, Castroneves was the fastest. Alongside him, Andretti, Power, Kanaan, James Hinchcliffe and Servià qualified for the final run-off. The first seven drivers used a Chevrolet engine. Scott Dixon was the best Honda driver in eighth. Except for Ana Beatriz , all participants set a time.
In the first heat race, Dixon scored a start-to-finish victory ahead of Takuma Satō and Alex Tagliani . All drivers remained in the lead lap. It was the fastest of the three heat races.
In the second heat race, Ed Carpenter led the first 46 laps. On lap 47, he was overtaken by Graham Rahal , who had started the race from seventh on the grid. Shortly afterwards, Rahal's teammate James Jakes had an accident . The race ended under yellow flags. Rahal won ahead of Carpenter and Simon Pagenaud . Simona de Silvestro had handling problems and crossed the finish line three laps behind. The first seven drivers stayed in the lead lap.
In the third heat race, Castroneves achieved a start-to-finish victory. He gradually pulled away and crossed the finish line with a lead of over three seconds on Power. Hinchcliffe finished third. The first eight pilots stayed in the lead lap.
As the best in the qualification, Castroneves received the bonus points for the pole position and was classified as a pole setter in the IndyCar statistics. Since he had changed his engine prematurely, he was moved ten positions back, so that Power got first place on the grid. In addition to Castroneves, Dixon, Satō, Josef Newgarden , Beatriz and Jakes were moved ten positions back due to an early engine change.
run
Power and Hinchcliffe dueled in the first round. Hinchcliffe prevailed and took the lead. Two driving lines were formed in the initial phase. Castroneves and Hunter-Reay soon worked their way up from positions eleven and twelve to the top 10.
After Hunter-Reay damaged his front wing in a duel with Rahal, debris lay on the track. These triggered a yellow phase. In this, all drivers completed their first pit stop and Hunter-Reay had his front wing changed. Since he refueled one lap later, he lost a few positions and dropped back to 21st place at the end of the field. Hinchcliffe kept the lead and defended it at the restart. Hunter-Reay gradually worked his way up again, while Power had handling problems and lost positions.
The second pit stop phase began on lap 115. Hinchcliffe briefly lost the lead to Justin Wilson , but took it back after his pit stop. Hinchcliffe led the race ahead of Rahal and Andretti, while Franchitti was lapped for the second time a little later. Franchitti had bigger problems with the vehicle set-up. Shortly afterwards, Power, who had similar problems, was also lapped.
On lap 138 there was a second caution phase after Tagliani had an accident in the second corner and damaged his car. In this yellow phase there was hardly any activity in the pits. Hinchcliffe fell by the wayside and maintained the lead at the restart. A little later, debris triggered the third and final yellow phase. After this restart, Hinchcliffe dropped one lap behind Rahal, but then took the lead again. The two drove several laps side by side until Hinchcliffe had finally prevailed. Rahal had to briefly hit the grass a little later when lapping and lost second place to Hunter-Reay. In this racing phase Satō and Beatriz retired with technical problems.
On the 190th lap, the final pit stop phase began under green flags. Hinchliffe pitted in the 195. There were difficulties when changing the left front wheel. The stop fell behind Carpenter, Kanaan and Wilson, who had a different strategy, but stayed ahead of Hunter-Reay and Rahal. After Carpenter's stop, Wilson led the race again for a short time. After all the stops, Hinchcliffe was back in the lead.
Hunter-Reay caught up with Hinchcliffe, but through regular laps he had no chance to attempt an attack on his teammate. Behind, however, there were still position changes and Kanaan and Carpenter passed Rahal. A few seconds before the end of the race, Dixon gave up at the pits, two laps behind. Like his teammate Franchitti and Power, he had major handling problems. The two were three and four laps behind. De Silvestro also had major handling problems and was lapped seven times.
Hinchcliffe finally achieved his third win of the season and won for the first time on an oval course. Hinchcliffe had dominated the race, leading 226 out of 250. He had thus completed more laps in the lead than in all previous IndyCar races. Hunter-Reay followed ahead of Canaan and Carpenter. Rahal was the best Honda driver in fifth. Pagenaud, who finished sixth, was also the only other Honda rider in the top 10. This gave Chevrolet eight drivers in the top ten. The top 10 were completed by Servià, Castroneves, Andretti and EJ Viso . The first ten drivers were the only ones to cross the finish line on the lead lap.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged. However, Hunter-Reay made up ground on Castroneves.
