James Hinchcliffe (born December 5, 1986 in Oakville ) is a Canadian racing driver . He was runner-up in the Indy Lights in 2010 and has been in the IndyCar Series since 2011 .

Racing career

Hinchcliffe began his motorsport career in 1996 in kart racing , in which he was active until 2002. In 2003 he switched to the Bridgestone F2000 Pro Series , which he immediately finished in third place. In the next season he continued to take part in a few races and finished fifth overall. His main focus in 2004, however, was on the US Formula BMW . With three wins he was runner-up behind Andreas Wirth . In 2005 he moved to the Star Mazda Series and finished the season with three wins in third place in the drivers' standings.

In 2006, Hinchcliffe moved to the Atlantic Championship for Forsythe Racing . With one win and two further podium finishes, he finished tenth overall at the end of the year and was beaten by his teammates, Andreas Wirth and Leonardo Maia . After starting for the Canadian team in the A1GP series in winter 2006/2007 and achieving second place as the best result, he played his second season in the Atlantic Championship in 2007 and moved from Raphael Matos to Sierra Sierra Enterprises as a teammate . While Matos won half of the races and thus achieved the championship title, Hinchcliffe was fourth overall with two second places as the best results. After taking part in several A1GP races again in the winter of 2007/2008 , he returned to Forsythe Racing in the Atlantic Championship. With one win he finished fourth in the championship, as in the previous year.

In 2009, Hinchcliffe moved to Indy Lights for Sam Schmidt Motorsports . With a second place as the best result, he finished one place behind his team mate Wade Cunningham in fifth place overall at the end of the season . In 2010 he moved to Team Moore Racing . At the third race in Long Beach he won his first race in the Indy Lights. With two more victories, he was runner- up behind Jean Karl Vernay .

In 2011 Hinchcliffe entered the IndyCar Series for the second race and started for Newman / Haas Racing . He achieved fourth place in his second race. In Lexington , Hinchcliffe led an IndyCar race for the first time. He benefited from a suitable strategy. However, it was not enough to place on the podium because, after losing a few positions, he got onto the grass and had to let all vehicles pass. He finished the season as the best rookie in twelfth place in the drivers' standings. For the IndyCar Series 2012 , Hinchcliffe switched to Andretti Autosport . He received the Go Daddy sponsored car that was previously driven by Danica Patrick . Dan Wheldon, who died in an accident at the 2011 season finale, was originally intended for the vehicle. At the season opener in St. Petersburg he reached the goal in fourth place. At the third race in Long Beach he achieved his first IndyCar podium finish in third. At the Indianapolis 500 he missed pole position by 2.3 thousandths of a second and started from second place sixth. A third place in West Allis was his first IndyCar podium finish on an oval. At the end of the season he was eighth overall, while his teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay won the overall standings. He also took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series . In 2013 , Hinchcliffe stayed with Andretti Autosport. Hinchcliffe scored his first IndyCar victory at the season opener in Saint Petersburg . After he failed early in the following two races, he won in São Paulo . After five races without a podium finish, he won his third race of the season with the Iowa Corn Indy 250 . In the last nine races of the season he achieved only a podium finish with a third place in Houston . Only the champion, Scott Dixon , had more wins than Hinchcliffe in the 2013 season. He finished the season in eighth place overall. Although Hinchcliffe was the Andretti pilot with the most wins, he was defeated within the team in the overall standings by Marco Andretti and Hunter-Reay. In 2014 , Hinchcliffe completed his third IndyCar season for Andretti Autosport. Third place in Lexington was his best result. He reached twelfth place in the drivers' championship and was therefore defeated by his three teammates. In addition, Hinchcliffe took part in two races of the United SportsCar Championship (USCC).

In 2015 Hinchcliffe moved to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports within the IndyCar Series . He won the second race in Avondale . Hinchcliffe had a serious accident in training for the Indianapolis 500 . He hit the wall at over 360 km / h. Forces of 125 g acted in the accident. Hinchcliffe was seriously injured when the right wishbone penetrated the vehicle on impact. His right leg was pierced and the wishbone penetrated into his left thigh. His hip was also injured. Since Hinchcliffe had lost a lot of blood from the injuries, his life was now in danger. Thanks to quick medical care, Hinchcliffe only had to stay in the hospital for two weeks and began rehabilitation training immediately afterwards. Ryan Briscoe and Conor Daly shared his cockpit for the rest of the season. In addition, he took part in a race in the United SportsCar Championship in 2015 before his accident .

In addition to two third places, he won the second race of the season in Long Beach. In the 2018 season, he finished in the top ten every time in the first five races. At the season highlight and sixth race, the Indianapolis 500, he failed as 34th in the qualification. At the Iowa Speedway , he took another win for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. A third place on the Iowa Speedway was his best finish for the 2019 season . He finished the season in 12th place overall. With the cooperation between McLaren and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, he was not announced as a driver for the team in the 2020 season despite a valid contract . Instead, he is returning to Andretti Autosport as a part-time driver.
