Wade Cunningham

Wade Grant Cunningham (born August 19, 1984 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand racing driver . He became IRL Pro Series Champion in 2005 . In 2011 and 2012 he took part in some races in the IndyCar Series . His brother Mitch Cunningham is also a racing driver.

Career

Cunningham began his motorsport career in 1998 in karting , in which he was active until 2003. Among other things, he won the Formula A World Championship in 2003. In 2004 he switched to formula racing and immediately finished fifth in the US F2000 National Championship . In 2005 he started in the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series and finished eighth overall with a win. He then went to Brian Stewart Racing in the IRL Pro Series . Although he only won one race, he secured the championship title thanks to another nine podium finishes. In 2006 he stayed with Brian Stewart Racing. Although he even won three races this season, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway , this time it was not enough to win the title and he was third overall.

After taking part in three races of the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series in 2007, Cunningham moved to AFS Racing / Andretti Green Racing in the IRL Pro Series . With a win he was able to defend third place overall. In 2008, Cunningham only took part in seven races, the championship now renamed Indy Lights . With two podium finishes, he finished the season in 19th place overall. In 2009 Cunningham competed for Sam Schmidt Motorsports again for the entire season in the Indy Lights. With two victories he finished fourth in the championship as the best driver of his team. Among other things, he won again in Indianapolis and thus became the first pilot to win the Indy Lights race in Indianapolis several times.

In 2010 , Cunningham only participated in two Indy Lights races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. He finished both races on the podium and won the Indianapolis Indy Lights race for the third time in his career. In the overall standings, he took 15th place. In 2011 , Cunningham made his debut in the IndyCar Series . He took part in a few races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. At the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway , Cunningham caused a mass accident in which his teammate Dan Wheldon suffered fatal injuries. Cunningham was 37th in the drivers' championship. Seventh place was his best result. In 2012 , Cunningham received an IndyCar cockpit for the Indianapolis 500 at AJ Foyt Enterprises . He was eliminated in the race. In addition, he completed the last race of the season of the IndyCar Series for AJ Foyt Enterprises, as the regular driver Mike Conway had temporarily waived participation. In the IndyCar overall standings he was 28. In the second half of 2012, Cunningham also took part in three events of the V8SuperTourer , a New Zealand touring car series. There he shared a vehicle with Jonny Reid .
