Reports
background
After the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 24 points from Hélio Castroneves and 27 points from Scott Dixon . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 9 points ahead of Honda and with 15 points ahead of Lotus .
Before the Indy, Honda made an update on its turbo engine. In contrast to Chevrolet and Lotus, Honda did not use a twin-turbo, but a single-turbo engine. For the sake of equal opportunities, Honda was allowed to modify the air intake. The update was originally planned for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, but Chevrolet previously protested. Chevrolet also protested against the update this weekend. On May 11, the appeal was dismissed in the last instance. Honda was allowed to compete in all subsequent races with the update. John Barnes , the team boss of Panther Racing criticized this approach during the race weekend with derogatory remarks on his Twitter user account. IndyCar took him then with a fine of 25,000 US dollars , and said a suspended sentence for the rest of the season out.
Compared to the last race, there were changes in the starting field: Bryan Herta Autosport w / Curb-Agajanian did not take part in this Indy with Alex Tagliani . The team wanted to focus on the upcoming Indianapolis 500 . In addition, it would have had to bear the travel costs itself, as the series only covered the travel costs for the first 22 pilots in the overall ranking. However, it stayed with 26 pilots as Ana Beatriz returned to the IndyCar Series at Andretti Autosport . The racing team fielded a fourth vehicle in this race.
The winner of all previous races at this Indy started with power (twice).
training
Due to the location of the track in the middle of São Paulo, there were no training sessions on Fridays. Instead, two training sessions were held on Saturday. In the first practice session, Power set the fastest time ahead of the Ganassi pilots Dario Franchitti and Dixon. Sébastien Bourdais was the best Lotus driver 1.6 seconds behind the front. In the second session, Franchitti was the fastest pilot ahead of Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay . The training was interrupted three times. First Castroneves drove into the tire wall at Turn 2, then Takuma Satō put an oil spill and three minutes before the end Josef Newgarden had a slip that ended the training early.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Power drove the fastest lap in the first group, while Franchitti was the fastest driver in the second group. All Lotus pilots were eliminated in this segment. Satō did not take part in qualifying due to an engine failure.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap. In the final section, known as the Firestone Fast Six , Power was again the fastest ahead of Franchitti, Dixon, James Hinchcliffe , Hunter-Reay and Justin Wilson .
Since Lotus changed the engine for all drivers, the Lotus pilots were moved to the rear. Wilson was also punished for driving without the required mechanics for the onboard camera in qualifying.
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday morning, Hunter-Reay set the fastest time ahead of EJ Viso and Power. There were several spins and slips and the resulting yellow and red phases.
run
Power kept the lead at the start of the race. Franchitti followed him in the initial phase. The two drove out a lead over the rest of the field, which was led by Dixon, Graham Rahal , Newgarden, Mike Conway , Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe.
Many pilots in the back of the field opted for a different strategy. Castroneves, who started from 20th place, pitted for the first time on lap 10. Satō, who started from 25th place, followed one lap later with his first stop. He was too fast in the pit lane and immediately received a drive-through penalty.
In the 23rd round, Ryan Briscoe triggered the first yellow phase. During an attempt to overtake, he drove into a pile of tires at turn 6. At the following restart on the 26th lap, Conway turned the runner-up Franchitti. Conway, Newgarden and Rahal had to drive through the run-off zone and lost time as a result. Franchitti made a control stop at the pits and dropped out of the top 20. This collision triggered another yellow phase. At the following restart in the 29th lap, another yellow phase was necessary. Simona de Silvestro turned Newgarden around in the second corner. This partially blocked the route. Franchitti benefited from this yellow phase and came back into the top 10.
At half-time, Power led the race ahead of Hunter-Reay. Behind them were Dixon, Tony Kanaan , Rubens Barrichello , Viso, Beatriz, Franchitti, Castroneves and Satō with a different strategy. Only Power and Hunter-Reay drove with a two-stop strategy. In the meantime, Dixon took over the lead, who planned a short, so-called splash-and-dash stop shortly before the end of the race. For this strategy to work, there was no yellow phase until the stop. However, a wall contact from Newgarden, in which this exit, triggered another yellow phase. The drivers who had not yet completed their last stop completed it in this.
When restarting, there were some shifts. Satō attacked Castroneves and Franchitti on the inside lane. He passed both of them and took third position. Castroneves also managed to overtake Franchitti. Franchitti referred to Satō's maneuver after the race as " Banzai Move ". Behind it Conway drove into the wall at the first corner. Marco Andretti , Beatriz, Dixon, James Jakes , Kanaan, Simon Pagenaud and Rahal failed to get out of the way and blocked the track in that area. Therefore another yellow phase was triggered. In the end, there were only eleven vehicles on the lead lap. With five laps to go there was the fifth and final restart. Hunter-Reay tried to drive past Power with an attack on the flank. But it failed.
Power eventually won the race ahead of Hunter-Reay and Satō, who scored his first IndyCar podium finish. It was Power's third win in a row. Power was in the lead 63 of 75 laps. The top 10 completed Castroneves, Franchitti, Hinchcliffe, JR Hildebrand , Charlie Kimball , Viso and Barrichello. Oriol Servià was the best Lotus driver in eleventh place.
Power extended his lead in the drivers' standings to 45 points over his team-mate Castroneves. Hinchcliffe took third place. The Penske team remained unbeaten in the fourth race of the season. It was the last race before this year's Indianapolis 500 , the season highlight of the IndyCar Series.
