IndyCar Series 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2012 Izod IndyCar Series season was the 17th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 101st season in American monoposto racing. It began on March 25th in St. Petersburg and ended on September 15th in Fontana .

Rule changes

technical changes

As part of the ICONIC project, there were some changes in the IndyCar Series in 2012. ICONIC is an acronym and stands for “Innovative, Competitive, Open-Wheel, New, Industry-Relevant, Cost-Effective”, which translates as “Innovative, Competitive, Monoposto, New, Industry-Specific, Cost-Effective”.

chassis

A new chassis was introduced for the 2012 season, which replaced the previous chassis, which was introduced in 2003 under the name “ IR-03 ” and since an aerodynamics update in 2005 has been called “IR-05”. There were two different aerodynamic kits for the street and oval courses . The chassis continued to be produced by the Italian manufacturer Dallara and cost $ 385,800. The new chassis is lighter than the previous model, which was actually only designed for oval courses. Originally it was planned that in addition to the aero kits from Dallara, some from other manufacturers should also be approved. However, the introduction was postponed to the 2013 season in August 2011.

The new chassis was tested for the first time by Dan Wheldon on a street circuit in Lexington in early August 2011 and on an oval circuit in Newton in late September 2011 . After Wheldon's fatal accident at the last race of the season in 2011, Dallara decided to dedicate the chassis to him and name it Dallara DW12 .

engine

There were also changes on the engine side. The previous 3.5-l V8 naturally aspirated engine has been replaced by a 2.2-l V6 turbo engine. In addition to the previous sole supplier Honda , Chevrolet and Lotus joined the IndyCar Series as engine manufacturers.

The new Honda engines were no longer created in cooperation with Ilmor , but were designed by Honda Performance Development in California. General Motors and Ilmor Engineering were responsible for the development of the Chevrolet engines . The engines were built in Michigan. The Lotus engines were produced by the British manufacturer Engine Developments , better known as Judd .

The manufacturers Chevrolet and Lotus relied on a twin turbo, while Honda took a different approach with a simple turbo. All turbos were manufactured by the supplier Borg-Warner.

tires

The tires will continue to be supplied by Bridgestone under the Firestone brand until 2013 .

Sporting changes

Former racing driver Beaux Barfield took over the racing management of the IndyCar from Brian Barnhart . Barfield was previously Race Director of the American Le Mans Series from 2008 to 2011 . From 2003 to 2007 he was responsible for running the Champ Car series. The former racing drivers Arie Luyendyk and Johnny Unser and Gary Barnard , a former racing steward of the Champ Car series, were announced as race stewards for the 2012 season .

For the race at Iowa Speedway , the starting grid was not determined by a classic qualifying, but by three races over 30 laps each. After training, the ten fastest drivers determined the first ten starting positions in a race. The other drivers were divided into odd and even positions and determined the starting positions 11-13-15 -... and 12-14-16 -... in one race.

The double-file restarts introduced one season earlier , in which the drivers drive side by side in two rows during a restart, have largely been retained. Exceptions were the races on the superspeedways in Indianapolis and Fontana and the race on the speedway in Fort Worth , where single-file restarts were carried out for safety reasons .

Teams and drivers

All teams used the DW12 chassis, Dallara aero kits and Firestone tires .

Drivers who have changed their team:

Drivers entering or returning to the IndyCar Series:

Drivers who have left the IndyCar Series:

Drivers who do not yet have a contract for a racing cockpit 2012:

* Only completed individual races in 2011.

Changes in the teams

  • Sarah Fisher Racing competes as Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing this season . The team responded to businessman Willis Hartman joining the team as a shareholder.
  • At the beginning of December 2011, Newman / Haas Racing announced that they would no longer compete in the IndyCar Series from the 2012 season. "The economic climate makes it possible for Newman / Haas Racing no longer to participate in formula racing", explained owner Carl Haas the step. Newman / Haas was founded in 1983 by Carl Haas and the actor Paul Newman and has since competed at the highest level of US monoposto sport: until 2007 in the Champ Car series, since 2008 in the IndyCar Series. Newman / Haas Racing won eight championships: 1984 with Mario Andretti , 1991 with Michael Andretti , 1993 with Nigel Mansell , 2002 with Cristiano da Matta and from 2004 to 2007 four times in a row with Sébastien Bourdais . Newman / Haas Racing won 107 races. The team has struggled with budget problems since Newman's death in 2008. According to media reports, the 2011 season was financed by the Haas family, which was hoping for a financially strong sponsor with good performance. Although the team with Oriol Servià reached fourth place in the drivers' championship in 2011 and James Hinchcliffe was rookie of the year , the team was unable to find a sponsor. In early April, the team announced their one-time return to the Indianapolis 500. However, this engagement did not materialize because the team withdrew its registration for the race at the end of April. According to the team, the preparation time was too short.
  • Long-time IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter joins the IndyCar Series with his own racing team, Ed Carpenter Racing . The team is owned by Carpenter and his stepfather, Tony George , former head of the IndyCar Series. George competed in the racing series between 2005 and 2009 with the Vision Racing team . The team receives financial support from the US professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller , who sponsors his vodka brand Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka . The team cooperates with Walker Racing and its team boss Derrick Walker . The team is based at Walker Racing's headquarters and is operated by Walker Racing.
  • MSR Indy planned to debut in monoposto racing in 2012. The team competed in the Grand-Am series as Michael Shank Racing , where they can look back on success. In addition to Michael Shank , racing driver AJ Allmendinger and businessman Brian Bailey are also involved in the project. In the end, the team did not compete.
  • Fan Force United first appeared in the IndyCar Series at the Indianapolis 500. The racing team entered the Indy Lights for the 2012 season . The engagement was announced at relatively short notice before the Indianapolis 500, as Lotus needed a team for Jean Alesi and Newman / Haas Racing withdrew its report at the end of April. A co-owner of Fan Force United is former IRL pilot Tyce Carlson .

Changes during the season

Before the Indianapolis 500, the fifth race of the season, Dragon Racing , Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Bryan Herta Autosport parted ways with their engine supplier Lotus . Dreyer & Reinbold Racing finally concluded a strategic partnership with Panther Racing at the beginning of May and took over their second leasing contract for a Chevrolet . Bryan Herta Autosport switched to Honda . Dragon Racing signed a deal with Chevrolet during the Indianapolis 500 training week. IndyCar reacted to this change and introduced a new regulation, according to which a team can only change engine manufacturers during the season with a special permit.

Racing calendar

The 2012 racing calendar was originally supposed to be published for the 2011 season finale and, according to series boss Randy Bernard, originally comprised 17 or 18 events. However, a later announcement was announced before the event. After Dan Wheldon's fatal accident at the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway , the official announcement was postponed as investigations into the accident were ongoing. In early December 2011, the IndyCar Series finally announced that the race on the fast oval in Las Vegas 2012 would be canceled.

Title sponsor Izod was guaranteed at least 16 events. On December 22nd, 2011, the racing calendar for the 2012 season with 15 events was finally published. On February 10th, the IndyCar Series announced the 16th event on the Milwaukee Mile .

The IndyCar Series returned to Detroit in 2012 and competed again at the Raceway at Belle Isle . The last time there was an IndyCar race took place there in 2008. The Auto Club Speedway in Fontana , where the IndyCar Series last competed in 2005, also returned.

With the Streets of Qingdao in Qingdao , the IndyCar Series was to be held for the first time in a race in the People's Republic of China . However, the race organizer canceled the race in mid-June. In this context, IndyCar boss Randy Bernard stated that the status of the season finale planned in Fontana is not contractually fixed and that the season finale could also take place after this race. About two weeks after the cancellation, IndyCar announced that the racing calendar would be reduced to 15 races as possible replacement events did not offer a long-term perspective. Title sponsor Izod agreed to reduce the racing calendar.

Three races took place on a permanent racetrack, five races on ovals and seven races on temporary racetracks.

In qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, Ryan Briscoe prevailed and achieved pole position in front of the two Andretti pilots James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay . Since only 33 pilots took part in the qualification, none of the pilots failed.

After Briscoe and Hunter-Reay fought a duel for the lead in the early stages, Andretti finally took the lead and was in the lead for a total of 59 laps in the first half of the race, which made him the driver with the most lead laps.

While Takuma Satō and Scott Dixon had completed many laps in the lead in the middle of the race , in the final phase there was an internal Ganassi duel between Dixon and Dario Franchitti for the lead. With two laps to go, Franchitti took the lead. In the final lap Satō tried to overtake him, but he lost control of his vehicle and hit the wall.

Franchitti eventually won the race under yellow ahead of teammates Dixon and Tony Kanaan . It was Franchitti's third victory at the Indianapolis 500 after 2007 and 2010. He became the first European to win this race three times.

In qualifying, Scott Dixon was the first time that no Penske driver achieved pole position . Dixon narrowly prevailed against Will Power .

In the race, Dixon kept the lead at the start before Power. The two then sat down at the top. In fourth place was EJ Viso , who had several drivers behind him until his pit stop on lap 28.

On lap 39, James Hinchcliffe hit the track barrier. The trigger for this was the pavement becoming detached. The race was initially continued under yellow neutralized and finally interrupted on the 45th lap with the red flag. The defective pavement was removed and replaced with a new one. After a break of around two hours, the race was resumed and the distance reduced from 90 to 60 laps.

Dixon maintained the lead again and scored a start-to-finish victory over teammates Dario Franchitti and Simon Pagenaud . It was Dixon's first win of the season and the first time since several engine manufacturers joined in that the first three pilots all used the same engine.
