Scott Ronald Dixon , MNZM (born July 22, 1980 in Brisbane , Australia ) is a New Zealand automobile racing driver . He has been driving for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series since 2003 and won the championship title five times (2003, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2018). In 2008 he won the Indianapolis 500 . In 2000 he became the master of the Indy Lights . He also won the Daytona 24-hour race three times .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

At the age of seven he began his motorsport career in karting , in which he was active until 1993. At the age of 13 years, Dixon moved in 1994 to the single-seater racing and became the youngest driver in New Zealand who has ever started in a Formula race. He competed in New Zealand's Formula Vee and was instant champion of this series. That year he became the youngest driver ever to win a formula race. He also competed in the B-class of New Zealand's Formula Ford and secured the runner-up title in this class. Dixon stayed in New Zealand's Formula Ford for the next two years, first winning the B-Class championship title in 1995 and the regular championship a year later.

1997 Dixon moved to the Australian Drivers' Championship for two years . After finishing third overall in his first season, he secured the championship title of this racing series in his second season. In 1999 Dixon moved to North America for Indy Lights and competed for Johansson Motorsports , the racing team of the former Formula 1 racing driver Stefan Johansson . Johansson also took over the position of manager from Scott Dixon, which he still holds today. Dixon won a race in his first season and finished fifth overall. In addition, he started in an ALMS race . In 2000 he stayed in Indy Lights and moved to PacWest Racing . Dixon decided six out of twelve races for themselves and won the championship title with nine points ahead of Townsend Bell .

CART

2001 Dixon switched to the CART series, in which he competed again for PacWest Racing, and became a teammate of the former Formula 1 driver Maurício Gugelmins . Dixon was instantly faster than his team-mate and won his third race in the series, which took place in Nazareth . In the further course of the season he achieved another podium placement and at the end of the season, well ahead of his team-mate, finished eighth overall. In 2002 Dixon switched to Target Chip Ganassi Racing and became the third driver alongside Bruno Junqueira and Kenny Bräck . He failed to keep up with his more experienced teammates, and at the end of the season he finished 13th overall. His best result was a second place.

IndyCar Series

In 2003 Dixon moved with his team, which Penske and Andretti Green Racing joined, in the IndyCar Series . His new teammate was the South African Tomas Scheckter . In addition to the season opener, Dixon won two other races and became the IndyCar Series champion for the first time. His main competitor for the title was Penske pilot Gil de Ferran . In 2004 Dixon got a new teammate with Darren Manning . Dixon did not keep up with the top of the field this season and at the end of the season finished tenth overall with just one podium, leaving Manning eleventh behind. He also completed a Formula 1 test for the British racing team Williams . In 2005 , Chip Ganassi Racing competed with three cars, and Ryan Briscoe became another Dixon teammate. The season did not go well for the entire team as the three drivers destroyed 28 racing cars in accidents over the course of the season. Briscoe was seriously injured in one of these accidents; Manning was sacked after ten races and replaced by Jaques Lazier and Giorgio Pantano , who shared a cockpit. Dixon consolidated his position as the team's number one in the season and took his first win since winning the penultimate race at Watkins Glen . In the overall ranking, however, it was only enough for 13th place.

The 2006 season saw Dixon compete for the first time with Honda engines, which were used by all teams that season. In previous years the team used Toyota engines . Dan Wheldon , who had won the championship the previous season, became Dixon's new teammate. This season the team managed to return to the top and Dixon, like his team-mate, won two races. At the end of the season he finished fourth overall, just behind Wheldon and the champion Sam Hornish junior . In 2007 Dixon was once again at the front of the field and won four races, three of them in a row. At the end of the season he narrowly lost the championship title against Dario Franchitti with 624 to 637 points and was runner-up.

In 2008 Dixon contested his sixth season in the IndyCar Series for Target Chip Ganassi Racing and started the season well with a win at the season opener. His second win of the season followed at the highlight of the season, the Indianapolis 500 , which he won for the first time in his career. He initially achieved pole position and drove most of the leading laps in the race. With four more wins and six more podium finishes, he secured the IndyCar Series championship title for the second time in his career at the end of the season. In 2009 , Dixon got Franchitti as a new teammate at Target Chip Ganassi Racing. Both pilots won five races each and dueled with Penske driver Briscoe for the championship title. In the last race, Dixon had to admit defeat and was runner-up behind Franchitti.

Dixon celebrates his 2011 Motegi win

2010 Dixon drove again at the side of Franchitti in the IndyCar Series. After he was able to show a second place as the best result in the first races on the circuit, he immediately won the first oval race of the season in Kansas . His first win of the season on a circuit followed in the eleventh race in Edmonton . He benefited from a penalty against Hélio Castroneves , who had crossed the finish line first. While his teammate won the championship title at the season finale in Homestead , Dixon won his third race of the season. He finished third in the overall standings. In 2011 Dixon started his ninth IndyCar season for Ganassi. In the first four races, which took place on street and street circuits, Dixon finished only once among the top ten drivers with a second place. In the first oval race, the Indianapolis 500, he started from second place and was in the lead for most laps. But it wasn't enough to win and he finished sixth. At the next event in Fort Worth , he finished second in both races. After two more podium finishes, he drove to his first win of the season in Lexington . He achieved pole position, the fastest lap and the most leading laps in the race. In Motegi he decided another race for himself. He finished the season in third place in the championship, while Franchitti took the title again. Although Dixon had not won an oval race, he won the AJ Foyt trophy for the best pilot on oval courses for himself.

Scott Dixon scored one of two wins this season in Detroit in 2012

In 2012 , Dixon completed his tenth IndyCar season for Ganassi. In the first two races in St. Petersburg and Birmingham he achieved the most leading laps, but it was not enough to win in both cases and he finished second. At the Indianapolis 500 he again completed a few laps of leadership. However, he did not win again. He finished second behind his team-mate Franchitti. One race later in Detroit , he finally achieved his first win of the season with a start-to-finish victory starting from pole position. In the following race, the Firestone 550 , Dixon was in the lead for most laps. However, he lost control of his vehicle in the second half of the race and hit the track barrier. After finishing eleventh in West Allis after a drive-through penalty imposed incorrectly, he finished fourth in Newton . After a retirement and a tenth place, Dixon won the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio . He won this Indy for the fourth time in the past six years. With a third place in the last race in Fontana , Dixon finished the season in third place in the drivers' championship. Within the team, he prevailed against Franchitti for the first time and since 2008 has been the best Ganassi pilot again for the first time.

In 2013 , Dixon stayed with Ganassi in the IndyCar Series. After finishing fifth in the season opener in St. Petersburg , Dixon was second in Birmingham . It was the fourth time in a row that he finished second at this event. After Dixon had finished in the top 10 only three times in the next eight races, he won three races in seven days with the race in Pocono and the two races in Toronto . With this he improved from seventh to second place in the drivers' standings. After finishing seventh in Lexington , Dixon was involved in a pit lane incident at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma . He collided with a mechanic on Will Power's pit crew . The mechanic was unharmed. The race management blamed Dixon for the collision and gave him a drive-through penalty. As a result, Dixon, who was leading 27 laps by then, fell back to the bottom of the field. He finished in 15th place. After he was flipped by Power and hit the wall during practice at the next event in Baltimore , the two drivers clashed again in the race. During a restart, Dixon attempted an overtaking maneuver. Power overlooked him, and the two collided. Dixon's damaged vehicle was not returned to the pits. Dixon was furious after the race at several decisions by the race management and said that IndyCar race director Beaux Barfield had behaved like an idiot and asked for his dismissal. Dixon was subsequently fined $ 30,000 for his statements and was also placed on probation until the end of the year. Dixon started the penultimate race weekend, the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston , which consisted of two races, 49 points behind the leader Castroneves . Dixon won the first race and finished second in the second. Since Castroneves crossed the finish line a long way behind in both races, Dixon took the championship lead 25 points ahead. At the season finale in Fontana , a fifth place was enough for him to win the IndyCar Series for the third time in his career. In the end, he had a lead of 27 points over second-placed Castroneves. With four wins, Dixon was also the driver who had won the most races in the 2013 season.

In 2014 , Dixon got a new Ganassi teammate, Tony Kanaan , who replaced Franchitti. Dixon made the top 10 four times in the first half of the season and finished third in Birmingham . It was the first time he hadn't finished second in the Birmingham race. In the second half of the season, Dixon only failed to make the top 10 once and made it into the top 5 seven times. He won in Lexington and Sonoma . At the season finale in Fontana he crossed the finish line in second place. Thanks to this race to catch up, Dixon finished third in the championship at the end of the season. This made him the only driver in the top 4 who did not drive for Penske.

In 2015, Dixon won the title because he had one more win than Juan Pablo Montoya

In 2015 , Dixon stayed with Ganassi. After two races without a top 10 placement, he won in Long Beach and was third in Birmingham . At the Indianapolis 500 , he achieved pole position and the most laps in the lead. He finished the race in fourth place. In the further course of the season he also won in Fort Worth . Dixon went into the final race of the season in Sonoma as third in the drivers' standings , which he won and in which he got the bonus points for most of the leading laps. With 556 points he was tied with Montoya at the top of the ranking. Since Dixon had one more win than Montoya, Dixon won the championship. Dixon was also the driver with the most victories in 2015, having won three races.

In 2016 , Dixon completed his 14th IndyCar season for Ganassi. The second race of the season in Phoenix and the penultimate race of the season in Watkins Glen he won. He finished the season as the best Ganassi driver in sixth place overall. For the first time since 2005, he did not make it into the top 4 of the IndyCar Series.

In 2017 , Dixon drove his 15th season for Ganassi, who switched from Chevrolet engines to Honda. Throughout the season, Dixon had a prospect of his fifth title. His only victory was in Road America . Before the season finale in Sonoma , he was second in the championship. In the end, however, he had to be content with fourth place in the race, among others behind Josef Newgarden , who won the title. Dixon finished the season third, behind two Penske drivers.

Dixon won his fifth IndyCar title in 2018

The 2018 season was the 16th for Dixon at Ganassi. Chip Ganassi reduced his team to two vehicles in order to focus on winning another title. In 2018, all teams used a uniform body for the first time, which was optically based on the CART racing cars of the 1990s and 2000s. After victories in Detroit , Texas Motor Speedway and Toronto , he took the lead in the championship. The key moment was an accident in Portland , which he survived unscathed, but fell back to the bottom of the field and fought his way to 5th place, while his closest rival for the title Alexander Rossi only reached 8th place due to an unfavorable pit stop strategy. Dixon and Rossi were the most promising candidates for the title at the season finale in Sonoma . While Rossi collided with his teammate Marco Andretti right after the start , Dixon secured his fifth title with a second place in the race. 51 years after AJ Foyt in 1967, he is the first driver to secure a 5th title. With his three wins of the season, Dixon overtook Michael Andretti (42) in the list of drivers with the most victories and is now in third place with 44 wins behind AJ Foyt (67) and Mario Andretti (52.)

During the 2018 season, Dixon and team boss Chip Ganassi announced that they wanted to continue their long-term collaboration, so that the 2019 season will be his 17th for Ganassi. His new team-mate is Felix Rosenqvist

Sports car racing

From 2005 to 2019 Dixon competed in the 24-hour race of Daytona in the Rolex Sports Car Series (from 2014 in the United SportsCar Championship , USCC) for Chip Ganassi Racing. In 2006 he won the race along with teammates Casey Mears and Dan Wheldon . In 2011 he finished second with Dario Franchitti , Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya . In 2015 he again achieved overall victory at the Daytona 24 Hours, together with Tony Kanaan , Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray. Since Chip Ganassi Racing did not field a car in the 24-hour race in 2020, he will start for last year's winner Wayne Taylor Racing. Together with Kamui Kobayashi , Renger van der Zande and Ryan Briscoe , Dixon won the race for the third time. The team set a new distance record with 833 laps.

For Chip Ganassi's factory-supported Ford GT team, Dixon was the third driver to compete in the longer races in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans . From 2016 to 2019 he clinched a class win in Daytona 2018 and a third place in Le Mans 2016 with his teammates Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook .

Personal

Dixon, whose parents are New Zealanders, was born in Brisbane, Australia. The family returned to New Zealand when Dixon was very young and he grew up in Auckland .
