Career
Inspired by his compatriot Emerson Fittipaldi , de Ferran began his racing career in karting in the early 1980s . In 1987 he was promoted to Formula Ford and in 1991 to Formula 3 . After winning the British Formula 3 championship in 1992, two years in Formula 3000 followed with Paul Stewart's team .
An impressive test drive in the Jim Hall Team's IndyCar at the end of 1994 brought de Ferran a contract for the 1995 season, which he finished with 14th place in the championship and a race win in Laguna Seca as Rookie of the Year .
After the dissolution of Jim Hall's team, de Ferran moved to Walker Racing for three years , where he finished second in the 1997 Champ Car Championship. After moving to Penske Racing , de Ferran could win the championship in 2000 and 2001 and win the Indianapolis 500 and runner-up in the Indy Racing League in 2003.
After winning the Indy 500, de Ferran announced his retirement from active racing at the end of the 2003 season. He won his last race at Texas Motor Speedway . In 2005 de Ferran took over the post of sports director with the BAR Formula 1 team and in 2006 with its successor Honda . In July 2007, Honda and de Ferran separated by "mutual consent".
At the end of January 2008, de Ferran announced that he would be active again as a racing driver and that he would compete in the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series with his own factory-supported Acura prototype from around the middle of the season .
