Simon Pagenaud (born May 18, 1984 in Poitiers ) is a French racing driver . In 2006 he won the Atlantic Championship . In 2010, he and David Brabham won the American Le Mans Series championship title . He has been competing in the IndyCar Series since 2012 , where he won the drivers' championship in 2016.
Career
Pagenaud started his motorsport career in formula racing in 2001 in the French Formula Renault Campus and immediately became runner-up. In 2002 he switched to the French Formula Renault. The racing driver won a race and finished third overall. He also competed in a Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup race . In 2003, Pagenaud stayed in both racing series. While he deteriorated to sixth place overall in the French Formula Renault, he was third in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup with a victory. He also took part in two German Formula Renault races.
In 2004 he defended sixth overall position in the French Formula Renault and was runner-up in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup with two wins behind Scott Speed . In 2005 he switched to Formula Renault 3.5 . With fourth place as the best result, he finished 16th in the overall ranking. In 2006 he moved to North America and started for Team Australia in the Atlantic Championship . Although he only won one race, he secured the championship title from Graham Rahal , who won five races.
In 2007 Pagenaud switched to the Champ Car series after winning the title , where he also competed for Team Australia. While his teammate Will Power won two races, Pagenaud failed to finish on the podium and fourth place was his best result. At the end of the season he finished eighth overall. After the Champ Car Series was reunited with the IndyCar Series in 2008 , the racing driver was without a cockpit.
Pagenaud switched instead to the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and became a teammate of Gil de Ferran . The two finished the season in ninth place in the LMP2 classification. He also made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In 2009, as in the previous year, he took part in the ALMS. Although de Ferran and Pagenaud won half of all races, it was only enough for the runner-up title. In 2010 he moved to Patron Highcroft Racing and became a teammate of David Brabham . The two won four races and won the championship title in the LMP class. In 2009 and 2010 he also took part in one race of the Le Mans Series , which he won. In 2011 Pagenaud initially stayed with Highcroft Racing in the AMLS. After a race he switched to Peugeot , for which he took part in some sports car races in the ALMS, Le Mans Series and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup . Together with Sébastien Bourdais , he won the race at Silverstone . He finished second in the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Peugeot 908 . This was his first finish at Le Mans. In addition, Pagenaud returned to formula racing and made his debut in the second race of the IndyCar Series for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing . He replaced Ana Beatriz , who had to retire with a wrist injury, for a race and finished in eighth place. In the further course of the 2011 season he came again to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, this time as injuries representative for Justin Wilson , and once at HVM Racing as a substitute for Simona de Silvestro . In the overall standings he was finally 31. In 2011 he also took part in two races of the V8 Supercar Championship Series .
For the 2012 season , Pagenaud received an IndyCar cockpit from Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports . Already at the start of the season in St. Petersburg he achieved a best training time and qualified within the top six. However, due to an early engine change, he started the race from 16th place on the grid. He reached the goal in sixth place, which was his best IndyCar placement to date. At the second race in Birmingham he managed to improve this position and he finished in fifth place. A race later in Long Beach followed with a second place and his first podium finish. In Detroit , at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio and in Baltimore , he was again on the podium in third place. In 2012, Pagenaud won the rookie championship by a large margin and was fifth overall as the second-best Honda driver. He also took part in a race in the American Le Mans Series. In 2013 , Pagenaud stayed with his racing team in the IndyCar Series. After finishing in the top 10 four times in the first six races, he won the second race in Detroit . It was the first IndyCar win for him and his team. Six races later at Lexington , Pagenaud led the race for a few laps. However, he had to admit defeat to Charlie Kimball and finished in second place. After a fifth place in the following race, Pagenaud achieved his second win of the season in Baltimore . In the overall standings he improved to third place and was again the second best Honda driver. In addition, he entered two races in the LMP2 class of the ALMS for Level 5 Motorsports . He decided this rating once together with Scott Tucker . Pagenaud also competed in a Rolex Sports Car Series race.
In 2014 , Pagenaud completed his third full season in the IndyCar Series for Schmidt. After finishing in the top five in the first three races, he scored a victory at the Indianapolis Grand Prix . In Houston , Pagenaud decided another race for themselves. Pagenaud had a chance for the title until the last race and eventually finished fifth in the drivers' standings. This made Pagenaud the best Honda driver for the first time. In addition, he competed for Extreme Speed Motorsports in two races in the newly founded United SportsCar Championship (USCC).
For 2015 , Pagenaud received an IndyCar cockpit from Team Penske , who introduced a fourth vehicle for him. While his three teammates Juan Pablo Montoya , Power and Hélio Castroneves had title chances by the end of the season and ended the season in the top 5 of the championship, Pagenaud was eleventh overall. Two third places in Detroit and Lexington were his best results. He also competed for Corvette Racing in two races in the 2015 United SportsCar Championship .
In 2016 , Pagenaud stayed with Penske in the IndyCar Series. At the season opener in St. Petersburg , Pagenaud achieved the most leading laps and finished second behind his team-mate Montoya. At the second run in Phoenix he also came in second and took over the championship lead, which he held until the end of the season. He won the next three races in Long Beach , Birmingham and Indianapolis . In the remaining eleven races of the season, Pagenaud achieved three more podium finishes. In Detroit he finished second, the race in Lexington and the season finale in Sonoma , he won. Pagenaud finally prevailed against his teammate Power with 659 points to 532 points. His other teammates Castroneves and Montoya finished third and eighth respectively.
He finished second overall in 2017 and 2019 and also won the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 .
