IndyCar Series 2015

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series was the 20th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 104th season in American monoposto racing. Scott Dixon won the drivers' championship for the fourth time in his career.

Rule changes

Sporting changes

Race director Beaux Barfield left the IndyCar Series and switched to the United SportsCar Championship , in which he was also race director. Brian Barnhart has been hired as the new IndyCar racing director. Barnhart was IndyCar Race Director from 1997 to 2011.

The Triple Crown , which includes all 500 mile races, has been discontinued. Also, no more double points were awarded for all 500 mile races. Double points, however, are awarded for the Indianapolis 500 and the season finale.

For all races outside the Indianapolis 500, the pit allocation has been modified. It is still based on the qualifying result of the previous race weekend, with the position of the vehicle and not that of the driver being decisive. If a vehicle did not take part in the previous race, the pit position will first be awarded according to the entrant points and then according to a lottery.

Standing starts, which were occasionally used in the previous season, have been discontinued.

Each vehicle is allowed to use four engines, which must have a total running time of 10,000 miles. Failure to observe these regulations only has an effect on the manufacturer's rating. An engine failure leads to a deduction of 20 points. There are ten bonus points for each engine that reaches the required 2,500 miles. Only the three best drivers from a manufacturer count in the manufacturers' standings. The bonus points for the Indianapolis 500 pole position are analogous to the driver standings. There is also one bonus point for each pole position and two bonus points for most lead laps.

technical changes

Aero kits for the Dallara DW12 chassis were introduced for the 2015 season . Chevrolet and Honda offer aero kits that are each supplied to their engine customers. The aero kits allow you to design your own engine cover, side pods and impact protection for the rear wheels. Each manufacturer offers two variants. One for the races on the street courses and the short ovals, one for the oval courses from 1.5 miles.

There are also fundamental changes to the chassis. So that the vehicles do not take off so quickly in the event of an accident, triangular holes were made in the underbody on the left and right.

Teams and drivers

All teams use the DW12 chassis and Firestone tires .
