history

The first test drives of the IndyCar Series took place at the Barber Motorsports Park race track in 2007 . From 2009 to 2011 the pre-season tests of the IndyCar Series took place here. For the 2010 season , the race was added to the racing calendar as a replacement for the Detroit Indy Grand Prix was sought.

The race was a commercial risk as the Talladega Superspeedway , a track where the NASCAR Sprint Cup competes, is less than 50 km from the track. However, the first two races were a success and the grandstands were full. At the first race, all campsites in the area were fully booked. In 2011, 49,000 spectators came to the race.

Names

The race was only called the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Presented by Legacy Credit Union at its first event . Honda has been the title sponsor of the race since 2011, giving the event its current name.
