Reports
background
After the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 27 points from Mike Conway and 33 points from Simon Pagenaud .
James Hinchcliffe and Sebastián Saavedra , who suffered minor injuries at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, passed the required medical examination with no objection and both were allowed to participate.
With Power (twice) and Hélio Castroneves and Ryan Hunter-Reay (once each) all previous winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice, Hunter-Reay led in front of Josef Newgarden and Castroneves. The training was interrupted three times with the red flag, so that the effective training time was limited. First, Graham Rahal turned . He got back out on the track unaided. The organizers used the interruption to repair a route marker. Shortly afterwards, Sébastien Bourdais slipped in the ninth corner. An electronics problem at Scott Dixon was responsible for the third red flag . With the exception of Dixon, all drivers achieved a timed lap. Although there was only one minute of regular time after the Dixon incident, all pilots who took to the track during practice were allowed one quick lap.
In the second training session, Hunter-Reay stayed in the lead. Bourdais took second, Power third. The session was interrupted once due to small parts on the track in corner 14. Bourdais set his best time at the beginning of training, Hunter-Reay his at the end of training. Bourdais slipped off the track again in turns 8 and 9. Castroneves also got off the track in these corners and a lot with a lateral stay in the last corner. Because of these incidents, the training was not interrupted.
In the third training session, Hinchcliffe took first place from his teammate. Bourdais stayed second, Dixon came third. Hunter-Reay dropped to sixth position. As in the second practice session, Bourdais was in the lead for a long time and was ousted by an Andretti driver shortly before the end . Castroneves triggered the only interruption at halftime after breaking down. The first 18 pilots were within a second.
Before the training there were eight unscheduled engine changes and repairs. On the Chevrolet side , the engines of Conway, Tony Kanaan , Power and Saavedra were repaired , on the Honda side, the engine of Jack Hawksworth was repaired. The Chevrolet engine from Charlie Kimball and the Honda engines from Schmidt Peterson pilots Mikhail Aleshin and Pagenaud were changed. Compared to the previous year, there were no starting place penalties, but instead 10 minus points for the manufacturers' ranking.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group, Pagenaud drove the fastest lap, in the second group Hinchcliffe was the fastest driver.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Newgarden, Castroneves, Hinchcliffe, Dixon and Hunter-Reay made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six. Bourdais were canceled the two fastest laps in this section due to an incident, so that he fell back in twelfth and last place.
Power finally set the fastest time and achieved pole position in front of Andretti drivers Hinchcliffe and Hunter-Reay. With Newgarden in fourth place, positions two to four were the three drivers who, while in the lead, had triggered a mass collision in the previous race. With his 33rd pole position, Power drew level with Michael Andretti in eighth place in the all-time leaderboard .
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday morning, Newgarden set the fastest time ahead of Castroneves and Hunter-Reay. Training was interrupted after Kimball had an accident. Kimball had an accident at Turn 13. He was uninjured and was given permission to take part in the race.
run
The start was postponed by several hours due to a strong thunderstorm. Since the lighting conditions did not allow the normal race distance, the race distance was reduced to 100 minutes.
The start took place on a wet track. There was a lot of spray. All drivers started on rain tires. Carlos Muñoz came out in the twelfth corner, so that Juan Pablo Montoya had to evade. Shortly afterwards, Satō turned in the eleventh corner and triggered a yellow flag. Power stayed in the lead ahead of Hinchcliffe and Hunter-Reay. At the restart on the fourth lap, Hunter-Reay passed Hinchcliffe into second position, while Power remained in the lead. There were several position changes behind, especially Montoya made up some positions. In the next laps, the gaps at the front increased. On lap 16, Power lost control of his car and drove through the gravel trap on the fifth corner. He lost the lead to Hunter-Reay and dropped to second place. His team-mate Montoya, whose pit radio was not working, had moved up to fourth place at this point.
After a dry track had developed, Oriol Servià became the first driver to switch to slicks on lap 20. Shortly afterwards, Bourdais Aleshin turned around in the fifth corner. Aleshin's engine went out, so it had to be restarted and there was another yellow phase. Aleshin lost a lap in this incident and Bourdais was given a drive-through penalty. In the caution phase, everyone except Saavedra pitted to switch to slicks. Saavedra therefore took the lead. Before his stop, Castroneves drove into the wrong pit, so that he lost a few positions. Muñoz turned into a guardrail under yellow on slicks without any outside interference and was eliminated.
On the lap after the restart, in which Saavedra kept the lead, Montoya rode out in the eleventh corner and stopped in the gravel. The incident triggered a yellow phase. Montoya resumed the race one lap behind. After the following restart there was another yellow phase. This time Carlos Huertas spun in the sixth corner.
At the restart on the 33rd lap, Saavedra lost the lead to Hunter-Reay. Saavedra then pitted at the end of the lap and switched to slicks. Hunter-Reay's team-mate Marco Andretti overtook Power after the restart and was thus in second place. The top 10 at this point completed Dixon, Pagenaud, Newgarden, Hinchcliffe, Justin Wilson and Rahal. Hunter-Reay took the lead. Andretti followed, a few seconds behind. A larger gap formed behind it.
During the last pit stops, Hunter-Reay temporarily lost the lead. For one lap each, Andretti, Dixon and Wilson led the race one after the other. Hunter-Reay then took the lead again, while 17 minutes of racing time were still open. Andretti stayed in second place. Power fell back to fifth. Dixon was now third, Pagenaud fourth.
Dixon caught up with Andretti. However, there was no more duel, as Aleshin had an accident on the 66th lap in the 14th corner and a yellow phase was triggered. The car and the boundary were badly damaged. Aleshin was unharmed. Since there was only a little more than four minutes of racing time, the race was not restarted and ended under yellow flags.
Hunter-Reay won ahead of his team-mate Andretti, whose pit radio had been out for most of the race. Dixon came in third and therefore not second for the first time in the fifth edition of this event. Pagenaud, Power, Wilson, Hinchcliffe, Newgarden, Kanaan and Kimball completed the top 10.
Power kept the lead in the drivers' championship. Hunter-Reay took second place. Pagenaud stayed third.
