Sebastián Saavedra
Sebastián Saavedra Ferreira (born June 2, 1990 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian racing car driver . He participated in the IndyCar Series from 2010 to 2015 .
Career
Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Saavedra began his career in karting , which he practiced from 1999 to 2005. In 2006 he made in the US Formula BMW his first experience in Formula racing and eleventh was in the overall standings. He also competed in two German Formula BMW races. In 2007 he did not contest a complete season in a series, but started in some races of the German, Asian and US BMW. He was most successful in the US series, in which he finished twelfth overall with a win. Although he won three races in the Asian Formula BMW, he was not included in the ranking because he was a guest driver. He finished the Formula BMW world final in fourth place.
In 2008 Saavedra switched to HS Technik Motorsport and competed in the German Formula 3 Cup . Saavedra took victory in three races and won the runner-up title behind Frédéric Vervisch . Although he was tied with his teammate Johnny Cecotto jr. but since he had one more win than Cecotto, he was runner-up. He also started in some races of the Austrian Formula 3 championship. In 2009 Saavedra returned to the USA and started together with JR Hildebrand for Andretti Green - AFS Racing in the Indy Lights . While Hildebrand won the championship title, Saavedra was third overall with two wins as the best newcomer.
In 2010 Saavedra completed his second season in IndyLights for Bryan Herta Autosport . In Newton he scored his only win of the season. Just before the penultimate race at Kentucky Speedway on September 4th, Saavedra Bryan left Herta Autosport. He was replaced by Daniel Herrington , who had already driven for the team last year. In the overall standings he finally finished eighth. Saavedra also took part in the Indianapolis 500 with Bryan Herta Autosport and made his debut in the IndyCar Series . In the end he qualified for the race with a lot of luck and through tactical mistakes by his competitors Paul Tracy and Jay Howard . In the race he retired in 23rd place. For the season finale of the IndyCar Series, Saavedra received a cockpit from Conquest Racing . He finished 33rd overall.
In 2011 Saavedra competed for Conquest Racing in the IndyCar Series. At the Indianapolis 500 he failed to qualify. In two races he was represented by João Paulo de Oliveira and Dillon Battistini . Saavedra finished the season in 25th place in the drivers' championship. In 2012 Saavedra returned to Andretti Autosport. He took part in the Indy Lights for the racing team, which is again cooperating with AFS Racing. He won the second race in Birmingham . At the end of the season he was in fourth place in the drivers' standings and narrowly prevailed against his teammate Carlos Muñoz with 383 to 377 points . In addition, Saavedra acted as a test and reserve driver for Andretti Autosport in the 2012 IndyCar Series season . He received a racing cockpit in three races. At the Indianapolis 500 his vehicle was used together with AFS Racing. He reached the 27th place in the drivers' championship. Saavedra also started a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series in the GT class.
In 2013 Saavedra received a full-time cockpit in the IndyCar Series at Dragon Racing . In the second race in Detroit he reached the top 10 for the first time in tenth place. In Baltimore he achieved his best placement of the season with an eighth place. With 236 to 370 points he was defeated by his teammate Sébastien Bourdais , who was on the podium three times, within the team. Saavedra finished the season in 21st place overall. In 2014 Saavedra - like Bourdais - switched to KV Racing . Saavedra achieved pole position at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis . However, he stalled his engine at the start and retired after a rear-end collision. A ninth place was his only top 10 finish of the season. Saavedra ended the season as the worst full-time driver in 21st place in the drivers' standings. With 291 to 461 points he was defeated by Bourdais. He also took part in a race for the newly established United SportsCar Championship (USCC). In 2015 Saavedra was in the IndyCar Series without a full-time cockpit. He shared a cockpit with Sage Karam at Chip Ganassi Racing and was used in five races. At the Indianapolis 500 , Saavedra was slightly injured in the race and was paused for three weeks. A tenth place was his best result.
