Johnny Amadeus Cecotto , known as Johnny Cecotto junior , (born September 9, 1989 in Augsburg , Germany ) is a Venezuelan- German automobile racing driver . He has both Venezuelan and German citizenship, but starts with a Venezuelan license. He is the son of former Formula 1 driver and motorcycle world champion Johnny Cecotto . He has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series) since 2009 .
Career
Cecotto began his motorsport career in karting . In contrast to his father, Cecotto jr. directly into the single-seater racing and in 2005 his debut in the German Formula BMW . He also took part in some races of the Italian Formula Renault . In 2006 Cecotto was active in various racing series. He was most successful in the German Formula 3 Cup , where he finished eleventh in the overall standings with a race win. In addition, he competed in the Northern European and Italian Formula Renault as well as in the Euroseries 3000 . In 2007, Cecotto switched to the international Formula Master and finished eighth overall in this category. He also took part in a Euroseries 3000 race weekend again. He achieved a third place.
In 2008, Cecotto Jr. back to the German Formula 3 Cup. With two wins, he was tied with second Sebastián Saavedra and third in the overall standings. In 2009, Cecotto switched to the higher-class Formula 3 Euro Series at HBR Motorsport . Cecotto was stronger than his teammates, but didn't score any points for the team either. In September, Cecotto made his GP2 series debut , racing for David Price Racing to replace the disappointing Franck Perera . He performed well on his debut and was eliminated from the sprint race just before the end of the race near the top ten drivers.
He then started for Trident Racing in the first run of the 2009/2010 season of the GP2 Asia series . Although he had scored points in both races, he was replaced by Dani Clos after the first race weekend . In the overall ranking he finished 17th. Cecotto returned to Trident Racing for the 2010 GP2 series . After eight race weekends he was replaced by Edoardo Piscopo . With a fifth place as the best result, he finished 23rd overall at the end of the season. In 2011 , Cecotto initially took part in the GP2 Asia series for Super Nova Racing . At the end of the season he finished 15th overall. He then received a contract with Ocean Racing Technology for the 2011 season . His teammate at the start of the season was Kevin Mirocha , with whom he had already formed a driver duo for a number of races in the Formula 3 Euro Series. For the last two racing weekends, Brendon Hartley replaced Mirocha. While Hartley scored points, Cecotto and Mirocha remained without points and Cecotto finished the season behind his teammates in 24th place in the drivers' standings. After the season, Cecotto completed his first Formula 1 test for Force India .
In 2012 , Cecotto started for the Barwa Addax Team in the GP2 series. The racing team won the team championship the previous season. After reaching the top 10 only once on the first four race weekends, he scored a victory in the main race in Monte Carlo starting from pole position. It was his first victory and also his first podium finish in GP2. After finishing second in the main race at Silverstone , he managed to win another main race at Hockenheim . With four podium finishes, he finished the season as the best driver in his team in ninth place. He also completed Formula 1 test drives for Scuderia Toro Rosso . For the 2013 season, Cecotto moved to Arden International and played his fifth season in the GP2 series. In Barcelona, Cecotto deliberately rammed Sergio Canamasas in a duel for fifth place. An event later in Monaco, he achieved pole position. At the start, he triggered a pile-up by blocking the first corner. Due to several unsportsmanlike actions in the 2013 season, he was finally banned from a race. With two fifth places as the best results, he finished the season in 16th place overall. He lost to Mitch Evans with 41 to 56 points within the team . In addition, he again completed Formula 1 test drives for Scuderia Toro Rosso.
In his sixth year in the GP2 Cecotto returned in 2014 back to Trident Racing. In the second main race in Barcelona , Cecotto managed to win the race from 16th on the grid. Another victory followed in Spielberg . In total, he was on the podium five times. The internal duel against Sergio Canamasas was decided by Cecotto with 140 to 29 points. In the overall classification he achieved his best final placement in the GP2 series with fifth place. In 2015 , Cecotto took part in two GP2 events for Hilmer Motorsport and one each for Carlin and Trident. After taking part in the 2015 GP2 round in Monza for Trident , Cecotto announced the end of his motorsport career at the age of 26. As a reason for his early resignation, he cited the suspension of sponsorship payments from Venezuela. Despite his announcement, he still took part in a GP2 race weekend for Trident and only then retired. In addition, Cecotto took part in two Auto GP races in 2015.
In 2016 , Cecotto initially received a cockpit at RP Motorsport in Formula V8 3.5 . He scored the first win for the racing team, but lost his cockpit after the third racing weekend. Furthermore, Cecotto played two GP2 events for Rapax as a representative for Arthur Pic . In 2017 , Cecotto again received a regular cockpit at Rapax in the GP2 series, which had been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship in winter .
