Remarks
  1. Strakka Racing did not find any drivers for the season and therefore did not participate in any races. However, the team stayed on the registration list.

Changes in the teams

There were some changes in the teams compared to the previous season: five racing teams withdrew from the championship, four new ones entered the championship.

Exits

  • DAMS got out of the championship after four years in which it won the team championship twice and relocated the resources freed up to the GP3 series . The team announced the exit in October 2015.
  • Carlin Motorsport ended its involvement in March 2016 after the racing team had not found any drivers for involvement in the series. Carlin entered the racing series in 2003. Carlin wanted to focus more on his involvement in the GP2 series .
  • Tech 1 Racing withdrew from the racing series a month before the start of the season.
  • International Draco Racing dropped out of the racing series at the end of the 2015 season and completely stopped racing.
  • About a month before the start of the season, Pons Racing announced its withdrawal from the championship in order to concentrate more on its Moto2 appearances . Pons had already signed two drivers for the season with Aleksander Bosak and Beitske Visser .
  • Zeta Corse did not report for the new season. The racing team had not completed any races in the previous season, but was on the entry list.

Entrances

  • The Durango Racing Team moved up into the series for Tech 1 Racing.
  • RP Motorsport expanded its motorsport involvement with a racing team in the Formula V8 3.5.
  • AF Corse took over the equipment from Draco and registered his team under the name SMP Racing .
  • The Spanish businessman Teo Martín entered formula racing with his racing team Teo Martín Motorsport and took over the vehicles from DAMS. At the end of 2012, Martín bought the remains of the HRT F1 Team , which had previously ceased racing, and entered GT racing in 2015 with his team . For the 2016 season he integrated Emilio de Villota Motorsport into his racing team.

Racing calendar

The racing calendar for the 2016 season comprised nine race weekends, each with two races. The event in Alcañiz was part of the Renault Sport Series , the event in Mogyoród part of the World Touring Car Championship and the Le Castellet event part of the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup . All other events were held together with the racing series Euroformula Open and International GT Open organized by Jesús Pareja .

Compared to the previous year, the races in Le Mans , Monte Carlo and the Nürburgring were replaced by Le Castellet, Monza and Barcelona .
