Euroformula Open
The Euroformula Open (2001–2008 Spanish Formula 3 Championship , 2009–2013 European F3 Open ) is a formula racing series that uses Formula 3 racing cars. The series is organized by the Spanish marketer GT Open. The series emerged from the Spanish Formula 3 championship, the first season of which took place in 2001. The series has been a European championship since 2009 and takes place on tracks across Europe.
vehicle
The teams have been using Dallara chassis since the series was founded . As engine suppliers, Fiat and Toyota were initially involved in the championship. Toyota was an engine supplier for the series from 2001 to 2006 and again since 2010. Fiat delivered the engines between 2007 and 2009. Engines from Volkswagen , Mercedes-Benz and Toyota were used in the 2019 season . A second championship, the so-called Copa, also took place from 2005 to 2014 . Pilots entering the Copa classification used older chassis.
The Dallara 320 Formula 3 chassis will be used from the 2020 season , which will be the first time the Halo system will be used at the Euroformula Open. In addition to a completely new chassis, the teams also have the option of using an upgrade kit for the previously used F-317 chassis. Compared to other Formula 3 series, the choice of the engine manufacturer is free in the Euroformula Open. Michelin has been supplying tires exclusively since 2015 .
history
The Spanish Formula 3 established itself in the early 2000s as an inexpensive national European championship, which was seen as an important step on the way to Formula 1 due to the success of Fernando Alonso , among other things .
Today's Euroformula Open goes back to the Spanish Formula 3 championship.
Although the current Formula 3 racing cars are still used, the suffix "F3" was removed from the series name at the beginning of 2014, as the engines did not comply with the FIA regulations for reasons of cost .
The two teams Fortec and Motorpark have been taking part in the Euroformula Open since the 2019 season after the planned Formula European Masters within the DTM could not win enough teams for itself. Since the same Dallara F3 chassis could be used, the changeover was possible at very short notice. Van Amersfoort Racing , who first decided on the Formula Regional European Championship after the Formula European Masters had been canceled, will also start in the Euroformula Open in the 2020 season.
The winter test of the GT Open racing series for 2020, which was scheduled for March at the Circuit di Catalunya , had to be canceled due to the corona virus.
procedure
Each race weekend is divided into 2 races each lasting a maximum of 35 minutes, with a half-hour qualifying session being held for each race. The races take place on Saturdays and Sundays, while training takes place on Fridays. Points are awarded for both races in the Formula 1 point system. In addition, one point is awarded for the fastest lap in the qualifying session. Super license points are awarded for the first eight positions in the championship . The master receives 15 points.
stretch
While the former Spanish Formula 3 championship, as a national Formula 3, was mainly on Spanish tracks, the Euroformula Open is mostly on European tracks that are also used by Formula 1 . Exceptions are the Pau and Pergusa tracks , on which no Formula 1 Grand Prix are held.
Since 2009, the races have also been held in parallel with the races of the GT Open Championship , which is also hosted by GT Sport.
