Fontana began his motorsport career in karting , in which he was active until 2008. Among other things, he became the Swiss KF3 kart champion in 2007. In 2009 he switched to the single-seater racing and entered the Formula Azzurra on. While his team-mate Alberto Cerqui won the championship title, Fontana finished seventh with two wins. In 2010 Fontana competed for Corbetta Competizioni in the Italian Formula 3 championship . With a twelfth place as the best result, he remained without points. In 2011 Fontana switched to the European F3 Open , in which he also competed for Corbetta Competizioni. With two wins he decided the overall standings for himself. He won the title duel with 120 to 115 points against David Fumanelli . In addition, Fontana made her debut for Jenzer Motorsport in the GP3 series this season and took part in a race weekend. He scored a point straight away.
In 2012 Fontana switched to the FIA Formula 2 Championship . With a win he finished the season in seventh place overall. In addition, Fontana returned to Jenzer Motorsport for two events in the GP3 series. With a fourth place as the best result, he was 18th overall. In 2013 Fontana contested a full season in the GP3 series for Jenzer Motorsport for the first time. With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in 17th place overall. In addition, he was accepted into the support program of the Formula 1 racing team Lotus . In 2014 Fontana switched to ART Grand Prix within the GP3 series . While his teammates Marvin Kirchhöfer and Dino Zamparelli regularly scored points, Fontana only scored points in four races. He came third twice. As the worst ART driver, he was eleventh overall at the end of the season. In 2015 Fontana completed his third full season in the GP3 series for Status Grand Prix . He finished this as the best pilot of his team in 16th place overall. In 2015 Fontana also took part in two races in the FIA Formula E Championship for the Trulli Formula E Team, which is supported by Super Nova Racing , and in a Formula Renault 3.5 race for Pons Racing .

Fontana has Swiss and Greek citizenship. He starts with a Swiss license. His father competed in Formula Ford races in the 1980s .
