report

background

After the Putrajaya ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with three points ahead of Sam Bird . Both drivers previously won an ePrix. Franck Montagny , Nicolas Prost , Karun Chandhok and Jérôme D'Ambrosio were tied on the following places, but were already 25 points behind di Grassi. In the team standings, Abt was one point ahead of Virgin and 12 points ahead of e.dams .

There were three driver changes. Montagny was replaced at Andretti by Jean-Éric Vergne . Vergne's contract was only for this ePrix. Originally, Vergne was supposed to take over the cockpit from Matthew Brabham and start together with Montagny. However, Montagny canceled participation at short notice for health reasons, so Brabham kept his place and Vergne took over the Andretti cockpit from Montagny. About three weeks after the ePrix, it became known that Montagny had tested positive for cocaine during the doping control at the Putrajaya ePrix and that he had therefore canceled his participation in this event. Montagny has been banned.

When China Racing took Antonio García unique Ho-Pin Tung . Tung was unable to participate in the Abu Dhabi 12-hour race . García last took part in a formula racing race in the international Formula 3000 championship in 2001 . The third debutant was Salvador Durán , who represented Katherine Legge at Amlin Aguri . Legge was unable to attend due to test drives in the United SportsCar Championship . The announcement of this driver change was only made four days before the race.

Durán, Nick Heidfeld and Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of each of their two cars for a maximum of five seconds from 150 kW (204 hp) to 180 kW (245 hp) during the race. For Heidfeld it was the second FanBoost in a row. For the third time in the third race, Amlin Aguri received a FanBoost for his vehicle with the starting number 77.

training

The first free practice started at 8:15 a.m. and lasted 45 minutes. With a lap time of 1: 16.696 minutes, Prost was the fastest driver, ahead of Daniel Abt and D'Ambrosio. The training had to be interrupted due to an accident by Michela Cerruti .

The second free practice started at 10:30 a.m. and lasted 30 minutes. Jaime Alguersuari set the fastest lap with 1: 15.930 minutes, followed by di Grassi and Stéphane Sarrazin . This training had to be interrupted twice because vehicle parts were lying on the track.

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each. Each group had 10 minutes to set a quick lap. Vergne set the fastest time in 1: 15.408 minutes, followed by Nelson Piquet jr. and cheers. Sébastien Buemi , Alguersuari, di Grassi, Jarno Trulli , Bruno Senna , Heidfeld and Abt completed the top 10. For Vergne and Andretti this was the first pole position in Formula E.

Bird, Brabham and D'Ambrosio did not set any time. All three damaged their vehicles when they came into contact with the barrier.

Senna was disqualified after qualifying because his mechanics had been working on the vehicle shortly before the start of qualifying. He had to start from last place.

run

The race lasted 31 laps. Before the race, there was again no introductory lap, instead the starting grid was moved two rows back, and immediately before the start of the race, the drivers moved to their actual starting positions.

The pole position was on the outside of the lane, but the drivers on the inside of the track started much better. So Piquet passed Vergne and immediately took the lead. Buemi passed Prost and was in third place. Di Grassi passed Alguersuari and attacked Prost in the first chicane, but did not pass and fell behind Alguersuari and Heidfeld, who had already overtaken Trulli. Chandhok also overtook Abt shortly after the start, the two vehicles touching each other slightly in the first chicane. As early as the second lap, an error in the battery management system caused Abt's car to shut down. The necessary restart of the electronics took so long that it fell back to the end of the field.

At the beginning of lap three, Heidfeld used his FanBoost on the start-finish straight to overtake Alguersuari and was now fifth. Di Grassi tried to take advantage of the situation and also to pass Alguersuari, but this fended off the attack.

In the fourth lap , Bird braked himself when approaching the first chicane, his vehicle was lifted from the curbs and crashed into the barrier. Bird had to give up the race. The race management decided to send the safety car out onto the track to rescue the car .

The race was reopened at the end of lap six. Vergne was immediately behind Piquet and put pressure on him but couldn't get past. António Félix da Costa drove straight ahead in the first chicane and parked his vehicle shortly afterwards. A lap later, when approaching the first chicane, di Grassi attacked Alguersuari on the outside, missed the turn-in point and let Alguersuari pass again.

After it was not possible to recover da Costa's vehicle, the safety car was sent out again for one lap on lap ten. At this point, Abt, who was one lap behind at the bottom of the field, gave up driving into the top 10 on his own and concentrated on achieving the fastest lap of the race. Piquet was still leading in front of Vergne, Buemi, Prost, Heidfeld, Alguersuari, di Grassi, Trulli, Chandhok and Serviá.

Chandhok fell back to 17th place with technical problems and changed cars shortly afterwards. On lap twelve, Sarrazin and Brabham passed Serviá. Brabham tried to overtake Sarrazin immediately, but he was able to fend off the attack. Serviá took advantage of this to pass Brabham again. One lap later, D'Ambrosio passed García.

On lap 13, Vergne passed Piquet and was now in the lead. At this point, however, both had already used significantly more energy than third-placed Buemi. At this point in time, Abt stopped again with a battery management error and lost two more laps.

Vergne immediately took several seconds off the lead. Piquet tried to save energy and stopped Buemi so that the pilots behind could catch up to the ninth-placed Sarrazin.

At the beginning of the 15th lap, Buemi Piquet attacked on the start-finish straight, but braked so that both drivers had to drive straight ahead in the chicane. The positions remained unchanged. In the further course of the round, Buemi and Prost could then pass Piquet. At the end of the 15th lap, Vergne and Serviá were the first drivers in the top 10 to pit to change vehicles.

Sarrazin passed Trulli and was now eighth. Shortly afterwards, Brabham also overtook Trulli. Sarrazin drove over the curbs in a chicane shortly afterwards, so that his right front suspension broke, he spun and crashed into the lane. The drivers directly behind him, Brabham, Trulli and Senna, only barely avoided a collision, while Senna hit the lane himself when swerving. In the process, he damaged the suspension of his car, but drove to the pits and changed the vehicle there.

As the race management sent the safety car out again due to the accident, all the other drivers pitted at the end of the lap to change vehicles. After the vehicle change, Heidfeld was in the lead after a very quick pit stop, followed by Buemi, Vergne, Piquet, Prost, di Grassi, D'Ambrosio, Trulli, Brabham and Alguersuari.

The race was released again at the end of the 18th lap. Heidfeld received a drive-through penalty for using too much energy with his first vehicle, which he started one lap later. It fell back to 14th place. Trulli put D'Ambrosio under pressure and attacked him, but did not get past at first. One lap later he succeeded in doing this. Prost also received a drive-through penalty for consuming too much energy. Cerruti also received a drive-through penalty for not complying with the speed limit in the pit lane.

Heidfeld overtook García on lap 23, Prost took his drive-through penalty and fell back to tenth place. Di Grassi drove the fastest lap of the race to date and caught up with Piquet. The race management issued two more drive-through penalties against D'Ambrosio and Heidfeld, because they had fallen short of the minimum time of 64 seconds when changing vehicles. D'Ambrosio fell to tenth, Heidfeld to 14th.

Brabham meanwhile put pressure on Trulli, who stopped the following drivers. Brabham braked on lap 28, his vehicle was lifted from the curbs and hit the wall. He retired and the safety car came out again to rescue the car. The race was reopened for the last two laps at the end of the 29th lap.

Vergne used his FanBoost when restarting , but he didn't get close enough to Buemi to attack him. After the race, Vergne complained that, due to a technical defect, the FanBoost did not provide any additional power, but rather reduced the engine power. Buemi braked before the first chicane so that Vergne was now directly behind him. When approaching the second chicane, he braked again and shortened it. Vergne complained over the radio to his team that Buemi had gained such an advantage, but no penalty was given. On the same lap, Vergne had to park his vehicle with a broken suspension.

Buemi won the race ahead of Piquet and di Grassi. It was the first victory for Buemi and the e.dams team. Piquet and the China Racing Team achieved a podium for the first time. Trulli, who scored the first points for his own team, completed the top 10, Alguersuari, Senna, Prost, D'Ambrosio, Serviá and Heidfeld, who used the FanBoost in the last lap to get past García. Abt achieved the fastest race lap.

With the third place on the podium in the third race, Di Grassi extended the lead in the drivers' standings and was now 18 points ahead of Bird and Buemi with the same points. In the team standings, e.dams took over first position from Abt with a two point lead, while Virgin fell back to third.
