Matthew Brabham
Matthew Chase Brabham (born February 25, 1994 in Boca Raton , Florida ) is an Australian - American racing driver . He won the Pro Mazda Championship in 2013 . In 2014 and 2015 he started in Indy Lights . He mostly drives with an Australian license. From 2014 to mid-2015 he competed with an American license. His father is Geoff Brabham and his grandfather was Jack Brabham .
Career
Brabham began his motorsport career in karting , where he remained active until 2008. In 2009 he switched to formula racing and initially drove in Australia with an Australian license. He first competed in the Victorian Formula Ford and finished ninth in his debut year. In 2010 he improved to fifth overall. In 2010, Brabham also drove in the Australian Formula Ford, in which he came 14th overall. In 2011, Brabham stayed in both series. He finished sixth in the Victorian Formula Ford and ninth in the Australian Formula One.
In 2012, Brabham decided to move to North America. He received a cockpit at Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing in the US F2000 National Championship . In the winter series he finished third overall with a win behind his teammates Spencer Pigot and Trent Hindman . In the regular championship, Brabham won four races and was on the podium a total of eleven times. With 339 to 332 points, he prevailed against his teammate Pigot and became champion. He also made guest starts in Europe in the BARC Formula Renault .
Because of his title win, Brabham received financial support for a cockpit in the Pro Mazda Championship in 2013 . He was signed by Andretti Autosport . Brabham dominated the season, winning 13 of 16 races. Only in one race in which he was eliminated did he not get on the podium. With 466 points he prevailed against Diego Ferreira (357 points) and his teammate Shelby Blackstock (297 points).
In 2014 , Brabham stayed with Andretti Autosport and received a cockpit in the Indy Lights . Because of his title win in the previous year, he was again financially supported. Brabham decided to change his license before the season and start with an American license. Brabham won the first Liberty Challenge on a street variant of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and finished second in the Freedom 100 on the Indianapolis oval . He was on the podium in two other Indy Lights races. He finished the season in fourth place overall. That put him one position behind his teammate Zach Veach . In addition, Brabham took part in two races of the FIA Formula E Championship for Andretti at the end of 2014 . At the beginning of 2015 , Brabham competed in the first three Indy Lights races for Andretti Autosport. He then switched to the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road truck racing series and competed in seven races. For this engagement he returned to the Australian racing license.
In 2016 Brabham drove again in the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road. He also took part in two races in the 2016 IndyCar Series for Team Murray .
Personal
Matthew Brabham comes from a motorsport family. His grandfather Jack Brabham was a three-time Formula 1 world champion. His father Geoff Brabham is a one-time winner of the Le Mans 24-hour race . His uncles Gary and David Brabham are also racing drivers.
