The Putrajaya ePrix 2014 (officially: 2014 FIA Formula E Ycapital Management Putrajaya ePrix ) took place on November 22nd at the Putrajaya Formula E circuit in Putrajaya , Malaysia and was the second race of the 2014/15 FIA Formula E championship . It was the first Putrajaya ePrix and the first race of the FIA Formula E Championship in Malaysia.
report
background
After the Beijing ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Franck Montagny and ten points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, Andretti was four points ahead of Abt and 15 points ahead of Virgin .
The race was postponed from the originally scheduled date on October 18th to November 22nd at the request of the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak , who was unable to attend on October 18th due to a different date.
There were two driver changes for the Putrajaya ePrix. António Félix da Costa took over the cockpit of Takuma Satō at Amlin Aguri as planned . Félix da Costa did not compete in the Beijing ePrix due to his additional involvement in the DTM . Matthew Brabham , grandson of three-time Formula 1 world champion Jack Brabham , took over the cockpit from Charles Pic at Andretti. Pic canceled his participation because he took part in Formula 1 test drives on the Wednesday after the race . Originally another driver change was planned at China Racing and Ho-Pin Tung was to be replaced by Antonio García . Tung would actually have competed in the Asian Le Mans Series (AsLMS) this weekend . However, the AsLMS race was canceled about a month in advance, so that Tung was finally registered as a driver by China Racing.
In order to avoid heavy rainfall that was expected in the afternoon, the schedule was moved two hours forward around two weeks before the race, so the race started at 2 p.m. local time. In addition, the two free training sessions in the morning were merged, the 30-minute break between them was omitted. It was also decided to start the race without an introductory lap in order to save energy.
Nick Heidfeld , Katherine Legge and Bruno Senna received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of each of their two cars for a maximum of five seconds from 150 kW (204 hp) to 180 kW (245 hp) during the race. Legge and Senna received a FanBoost for the second time in a row .
training
The free practice started at 7.45 a.m. and lasted 75 minutes. Bird was the fastest driver with a lap time of 1: 21.496 minutes, ahead of Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Sébastien Buemi .
The training had to be interrupted twice. First Michela Cerruti lost the left rear wheel of her vehicle, then five minutes before the end Heidfeld crashed into the tire wall at turn 3 and damaged the left front of his car.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 10:00 a.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each. Each group had 10 minutes to set a quick lap. Nicolas Prost set the fastest time in 1: 21.779 minutes, followed by Oriol Servià and D'Ambrosio. Bird, Daniel Abt , Jarno Trulli , Karun Chandhok , Nelson Piquet jr completed the top 10 . , Heidfeld and Senna.
Di Grassi and Jaime Alguersuari did not set any time. Di Grassi damaged his car when he hit the boundary wall on his first fast lap, after which he drove slowly back to the pits. Alguersuari ran into him in a fast bend, had to swerve and hit the wall himself with his vehicle, which resulted in a red flag . A Tung accident and a technical defect at Piquet also interrupted the qualifying sessions.
Prost was moved ten positions back because he had caused an accident with Heidfeld in the last race, but still got the three points for pole position. D'Ambrosio, who should have started from second place on the grid because of this, was disqualified due to excessive energy consumption and had to start from the back row. Buemi was also disqualified because he was below the minimum weight with his car.
run
The race lasted 31 laps. There was no lead-in lap before the race, as the Beijing ePrix drivers covered it very slowly in order to save energy. Instead, the starting grid was moved five rows back, and the drivers then moved to their actual starting positions immediately before the start of the race.
At the start, Servià kept the lead in front of Bird and Trulli. Abt started badly and fell back to last place.
Already on the first lap, Legge lost control of her car when braking into turn 8 and hit Cerruti. After the race, she received a drive-through penalty for causing this collision, which was converted into a time penalty of 23 seconds. In addition, Brabham braked himself when approaching Turn 11 and collided with Heidfeld. Heidfeld drove on, but Brabham then stood with his vehicle across the direction of travel in the middle of the route. The race management then decided to send the safety car out onto the track. Servià continued to lead in front of Bird and Trulli, followed by Chandhok, Piquet, Heidfeld, Senna, Stéphane Sarrazin , Montagny and Félix da Costa.
The race was released again after the fourth lap. At the restart, Bird was right behind Servià and took the lead when approaching Turn 4 . Trulli also passed Servià on the same lap, and Montagny overtook Sarrazin and Senna and was seventh. On lap eight, Chandhok also passed Servià. In turn 5, Montagny collided with Heidfeld during an attempt to overtake, who crashed into the lane and gave up the race. Senna passed Montagny again, who was subsequently given a drive-through penalty for causing this collision, which was converted into a time penalty of 23 seconds. Heidfeld later went out again with his second vehicle, but was disqualified because he had not changed the vehicle within the pits.
The safety car went out again to rescue Heidfeld's vehicle. Montagny and Senna ignored the yellow flags and walked past Piquet, who had already slowed down, but immediately let him pass again.
On the tenth lap, Abt, who was 14th at the time, was the first driver to pit to change vehicles. He changed vehicles during the safety car phase without losing much time, but had to contest more than two thirds of the race with the second vehicle. Cerruti gave up the race at this point.
The race was released again at the end of the eleventh lap, Bird immediately took a clear lead at the front. On the approach to turn 11 , Piquet skidded, Senna evaded to the outside and was hit by Montagny, who wanted to take advantage of this and had attempted to overtake on the inside. Montagny damaged his front wing and pitied at the end of the lap. He lost a lap due to the repair and dropped to 17th place. Tung spun on Turn 3 and lost a few positions, but continued the race.
Halfway through the race, Bird was in the lead by around seven seconds, followed by a close-knit group consisting of Trulli, Chandhok, Servià, Piquet, Senna and Félix da Costa. On lap 17, Brabham spun again. Trulli, Chandhok, Piquet, Servià and Félix da Costa pitted to change vehicles at the end of the lap. Senna took second place, but then collided with the lapped Montagny and lost several seconds. At the end of the lap, he also pitted, as did his immediate rivals di Grassi, Prost, Buemi and Alguersuari. Bird changed his vehicle at the end of lap 19, and Abbot took the lead, but his RESS only had about 50 percent energy at this point. Bird was around 25 seconds behind, Trulli another six seconds, closely followed by di Grassi, Piquet, Prost and Buemi. Behind them were D'Ambrosio, Senna, Chandhok, Servià and Félix da Costa by some distance. At this point in time, all drivers were already driving the second vehicle.
Buemi passed his team-mate after a braking maneuver by Prost and was now in sixth place. Trulli and Montagny received drive-through penalties on lap 22, Trulli had used too much energy with his first vehicle, Montagny had driven too fast in the pit lane. When braking into Turn 1 , Piquet passed di Grassi. A lap later, Piquet collided with Trulli at the same point when he tried to overtake Trulli on the outside, but the latter pushed him against the wall. Piquet had to park his vehicle a few meters away with a broken rear suspension. Trulli was also subsequently punished for causing this collision with a drive-through penalty, which was converted into a time penalty of 23 seconds. Buemi made several attempts to overtake di Grassi, but couldn't get past.
Abt was still in the lead, but had to save energy, so that Bird caught up around four seconds per lap and on lap 24 was only eight seconds behind him. Di Grassi, Buemi, Prost, D'Ambrosio and Senna followed with a further twelve seconds gap. Chandhok in eighth place was already 30 seconds behind the leader, followed by Servià, Félix da Costa and Alguersuari. Trulli, who had previously taken his drive-through penalty, was now in 12th place, another ten seconds behind, but gave up the race two laps later.
On lap 27 Bird had caught up with Abt, in turn 4 Abt let him pass without resistance. One lap later, di Grassi, Buemi, Prost and Senna also passed Abt without a fight. Shortly afterwards, Senna overtook Prost, who had previously run into Abt at Turn 11 and therefore lost direct contact with Buemi. This was the first overtaking maneuver in the FIA Formula E Championship in which a driver used the FanBoost .
Shortly afterwards, D'Ambrosio, Chandhok, Alguersuari, Servià and Félix da Costa also passed Abt, who was only in eleventh place and thus outside the points.
Senna caught up with di Grassi and Buemi on the penultimate lap and was now within striking distance. On the last lap, he lost control of his car at Turn 10 and hit the barrier hard. The vehicle was badly damaged, he retired and was classified in 14th place.
Bird won the race four seconds ahead of di Grassi and Buemi. It was the first victory for him and the Virgin Racing Formula E team . Buemi achieved the first podium placements for himself and the e.dams team. The top 10 were completed by Prost, D'Ambrosio, Chandhok, Servià, Félix da Costa, Alguersuari and Abt, who had to drive more than ten seconds per lap slower in the last laps. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Alguersuari.
Di Grassi thus retained the lead in the overall standings, Bird took second place from Montagny, who was now third. In the team ranking, Abt took first place ahead of Virgin and e.dams.
About six weeks after the ePrix, it was revealed that Montagny had tested positive for cocaine in the doping test after the race . He was then banned. On March 28, 2015, Montagny was subsequently disqualified and banned from the FIA Anti-Doping Committee for two years.
