Ho-Pin Tung ( Chinese  董荷斌 , Pinyin Dǒng Hébīn ; born December 4, 1982 in Velp , Netherlands ) is a Chinese- Dutch racing driver . He became the German Formula 3 champion in 2006 . In 2007, 2008 and 2010 he competed in the GP2 series .

Career

Tung began his motorsport career in karting in the Netherlands in 1997 . After being in 2001 and 2002 in the Netherlands and Benelux Formula Ford experience in Formula racing had collected, he moved in 2003 to the Asian Formula BMW and was dominant champion. Tung won ten out of 14 races and was only off the podium in one race. As a reward for winning the title, he took part in a Formula 1 test drive by the Williams team. In 2004 Tung switched to the German Formula 3 Cup . After finishing seventh overall in his first season, he won two races in 2005 and was third overall. In his third season, Tung won the championship title with nine wins in 2006.

In early 2007 he started in several races in the 2006/07 season in the A1GP series, where he was the first Chinese to make the podium in Sydney . In the same year he drove in the GP2 series for BCN Competición . In Spa-Francorchamps he got his first points with eighth place in the main race and fourth place in the sprint race. He finished the season in 23rd place in the drivers' championship.

In 2008 Tung switched to Trident Racing , for which he initially competed in the newly created GP2 Asia series . He finished the season in 21st place overall. He lost 1 to 3 points to his teammate Harald Schlegelmilch . In the regular GP2 series he stayed with Trident and played his second season at the side of Mike Conway . Tung scored his only points at the race weekend in Monte Carlo . After finishing seventh in the main race, he finished second behind Conway in the sprint race and gave the team a double victory. At the end of the season he was in 18th place overall. Internally he lost to Conway with 7 to 20 points. He also contested a few GT races in the International GT Open .

In the 2008/09 season Tung started again in the A1GP series and scored the only points for the Chinese A1 team , which finished 18th in the overall standings at the end of the season. He then switched to Superleague Formula and started the 2009 season for the Atlético Madrid team . After finishing second on the podium in Zolder , he switched to the Galatasaray team after three race weekends and won the last race of the season in Jarama .

In the 2010 Formula 1 season , Tung was the official reserve driver for the Renault team. He also competed for DAMS in the 2010 season of the GP2 series together with his fellow Renault test driver Jérôme D'Ambrosio . He collided with Jules Bianchi during the race on the Hungaroring . Both pilots had to be hospitalized with lumbar vertebrae fractures. While Bianchi required surgery, Tung's injury did not require surgery. In contrast to Bianchi, however, he was canceled for two race weekends. After he was originally supposed to skip the last race weekend, he returned to the GP2 series as a replacement for the sick Christian Vietoris for Racing Engineering . At the end of the season he finished 28th overall without any points. Tung didn't keep up with any of his teammates. In 2011 Tung remained a test driver at Renault. In addition, Tung received an IndyCar cockpit from Dragon Racing for two races . After suffering a concussion in an accident in qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 , he was not allowed to complete any further qualifying laps and did not qualify. He eventually made his debut in Sonoma . He also took part in a Superleague Formula event this season . He started for Team China, supported by DeVillota.com Motorsport , and tenth place was his best result. In 2011 Tung also contested four races for Exim Bank Team China in the FIA GT1 World Championship .

In 2012 Tung switched to the Asian Porsche Carrera Cup . With three podium finishes, he reached fifth place overall. In 2013, Tung stayed in the Asian Porsche Carrera Cup and won a race. He finished the season again in fifth place in the overall standings. He also completed long-distance races. For KCMG he competed for the first time in the 24-hour race of Le Mans . With OAK Racing he took part in three of four races of the newly founded Asian Le Mans Series (AsLMS). He won two races and was third in the drivers' championship. In 2014 Tung was under contract as a long-distance driver with OAK Racing. He contested three races in the newly founded United SportsCar Championship and the Le Mans 24-hour race . In the AsLMS he was an OAK regular pilot. He won all four races and won the championship along with teammate David Cheng . He also drove again in the Asian Porsche Carrera Cup. In addition, Tung competed in the newly founded FIA Formula E championship in 2014/15 for the China Racing team supported by Campos Grand Prix . He did not start because of scheduling conflicts. After the fourth race he lost his cockpit.
