Christian Vietoris (born April 1, 1989 in Gerolstein ) is a German automobile racing driver . In 2010 and 2011 he drove in the GP2 series for Racing Engineering . From 2011 to 2016 he competed in the DTM for Mercedes .
Career
After some success in karting , Vietoris switched to German Formula BMW in 2005 . After finishing 17th in his debut season, he won the championship title in 2006 with nine wins from 18 races. That year he also won the Formula BMW World Final in Valencia . In 2007 , Vietoris made his A1GP debut as a substitute for Nico Hülkenberg in Mexico City for the German team . Then Vietoris contested a season in the German Formula 3 Cup , in which he finished fifth overall with two wins. Vietori's highlight in 2007, however, was taking part in a Formula 1 test day for BMW Sauber , which he received as a prize for his victory at the Formula BMW World Finals. In the 2007/2008 A1GP season , Vietoris competed for the German team on three race weekends and won the main race in Taupo .
In 2008 Vietoris started in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Mücke Motorsport . In his debut season, Vietoris won a race at the Norisring and took sixth place in the overall standings and was second-best German behind Hülkenberg. In 2009 Vietoris contested his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Mücke Motorsport and had a chance of winning the championship. He won four races and was the only driver to score points in every race he started. One race weekend before the end, Vietoris had to be satisfied with the runner-up title behind Jules Bianchi . He was also the best German pilot in the Euro Series.
In the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 Vietoris went for DAMS at the start. After he had started the season well with a victory in the sprint race of the first race weekend on the Yas Marina Circuit , he did not score any further points during the season and finally finished tenth in the overall standings. In 2010 Vietoris started for Racing Engineering in the GP2 series . After he had difficulties getting in at the beginning of the season and, unlike his team-mate Dani Clos, did not ride up front, he finished second on the podium in both races on the Hungaroring race weekend . In the sprint race in Monza , Vietoris finally achieved his first victory in the GP2 series. After he could not take part in the last race of the season due to appendicitis, he finished ninth overall at the end of the season.
In 2011 Vietoris contested his second season in the GP2 series for Racing Engineering. After an accident on the first race weekend, he paused the following two race weekends because of a severe headache. On the fifth race weekend at Silverstone , he scored his first points of the season in second. On the following two race weekends, Vietoris staged again. At the Nürburgring he works his way up from 23rd place on the grid to fourth place in the rainy sprint race. On the Hungaroring , he initially led the sprint race, but spun when it started to rain and collided with an opponent. This damaged his front wing and he crossed the finish line outside of the points. One race later, at the main race in Spa-Francorchamps , he led the race again until it started to rain. This time, however, he kept the lead and scored his first win of the season. Another victory followed at the season finale in Monza. He finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' championship. He was one position ahead of his teammate Clos, who, unlike Vietoris, competed in every race. Parallel to his GP2 commitment went Vietoris 2011 for Persson Motorsport in an AMG-Mercedes C-Class in the DTM at the start. In the eighth race in Oschersleben , he scored his first points in fifth. At the end of the season he was 14th in the overall standings. His teammates Renger van der Zande and Susie Wolff did not score any points.
In 2012 Vietoris decided to switch completely to touring car racing. In the DTM he was given a cockpit at the Mercedes racing team HWA . In the first race he achieved his best DTM position to date with fourth place. He was unable to repeat this in the further course of the season. With four top 10 placements, Vietoris was twelfth in the drivers' standings and third-best Mercedes driver. In 2013 Vietoris stayed with HWA in the DTM. At the season opener at the Hockenheimring he achieved his first podium finish with a third place. He repeated this result at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, the Norisring and the Nürburgring. Vietoris ended the season as the best Mercedes driver in fourth place overall. In 2014 Vietoris competed again for HWA in the DTM. At the second round in Oschersleben he achieved his first DTM victory. He finished the season as the best Mercedes driver in fourth place overall. In 2015 Vietoris completed his fifth DTM season for HWA. He chose 8th as his starting number. With a second place as the best result, he was 16th in the overall ranking.
For the DTM season in 2016 returned back to Vietoris Mucke Motorsport. He achieved two podium finishes and finished the season in 14th place overall.
