Career

Van der Zande began his motorsport career in karting in 1999 , where he was active until 2003. In 2004, the young racing driver started in the Dutch Formula Renault for the first time and finally finished seventh overall. A year later he secured the championship title of this series. In 2005 he was also active in the German Formula Renault series, which he finished in fifth. In 2006 he switched to German Formula 3 and was fourth in the overall standings. He also took part in a number of A1 Grand Prix races the following winter .

In 2007 Van der Zande switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series and drove for the Prema Powerteam . With a victory in the sprint race on the Circuit de Catalunya as the best result, he finished eleventh in the overall standings. Van der Zande also competed in the Formula 3 Euroseries in 2008 . Driving for the Prema Powerteam again, he won the sprint races in Hockenheim and Zandvoort , which was his home race. At the end of the season, Van der Zande was fourth overall.

In the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 Van der Zande started in the second race in Dubai for Arden International as a replacement for Mika Mäki . Van der Zande didn't score any points and was replaced by Edoardo Mortara at the next race weekend . In 2009 van der Zande started in the British Formula 3 championship . After finishing second in the championship with no chance of winning the title one race weekend before the end, he ended his engagement early. With three wins, van der Zande finished third overall at the end of the season. After having already participated in a Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend, he returned to the Formula 3 Euro Series after leaving the British Formula 3 Championship and immediately won the Sunday race. In the overall standings, he finished 15th overall. In 2010 he started for RSC Mücke Motorsport in the newly founded GP3 series . Like his two teammates, he did not attract any attention in the GP3 series. Third place was his only result in the points. At the end of the season he finished 21st in the overall ranking. His team came last in the team ranking. He also made two guest starts in the Formula 3 Euro Series.

In 2011 van der Zande switched to touring car racing to Persson Motorsport in the DTM . He received an AMG-Mercedes C-Class from 2008. At the race in Valencia he finished in fifth place, but because his car did not meet the rules in qualifying, he was disqualified. He ended the season without points. Two tenth places were his best placements.
