Season report
A total of 37 drivers were used in the first season of the GP3 series. The pilots came from different racing series. With Leonardo Cordeiro ( South American Formula 3 Championship ), António Félix da Costa (Northern European Formula Renault ) and Rio Haryanto (Pacific Formula BMW ), three reigning champions competed in the GP3 series.
This season a total of 19 drivers achieved podium placements, 8 of which were racing drivers who won a race. The dominant driver of the season was the Mexican Esteban Gutiérrez , who won five races and ultimately became the first champion of the GP3 series. Robert Wickens , Nico Müller and Alexander Rossi made up the places behind the champion among themselves and were, besides Gutiérrez, the only drivers who could win more than one race. History was also made by the first winner of the GP3 series, Pål Varhaug , who, after his triumph in the first race, did not achieve any further placement in the points.
Due to injuries, Simon Trummer and James Jakes had to skip several races. In an accident at Hockenheim, Trummer sustained a back injury with one broken and three broken vertebrae. Jakes also had to take a break after an accident in Hockenheim with a ligament injury in his right arm. The oldest pilot this season was Marco Barba (24 years), who represented Trummer for two races. Vittorio Ghirelli went down in history as the youngest driver . The Italian was only 15 years old on the first race weekend. Since he could not start on the first race weekend, he took part in a GP3 race for the first time at the age of 16.
