Meritus is a Malaysian automobile racing team that mainly works in formula racing and will be active in the JK Racing Asia Series in 2012 . It is based in Kuala Lumpur .

history

The racing team, founded by Irishman Peter Thompson , has its origins in Europe, where from 1989 he worked as PTM Motorsport in Formula Opel ( Euroseries and EFDA Nations Cup ) and Formula Vauxhall Lotus as well as in International Formula 3000 in 1993 and in British Formula One in 1994. 3 championship . In 1995 the racing team relocated to Asia under the name Meritus Asia Pacific Ltd and took part in the Formula Asia 2000, the only FIA- sanctioned monoposto series in Southeast Asia at the time . He stayed in this championship until the end of 2002 and then competed in the Asian Formula Renault , in which only the Macau races in 2002 and 2003 were contested, with Jamie Green winning in 2002. In 2003 the team joined the Formula BMW Asia and is still active in its successor JK Racing Asia Series. Also in 2003 it won the Merdeka 12-hour race at the Sepang International Circuit with a Porsche GT3 when it took part for the first time . From 2000 to 2003, the team raced cars in British Formula 3 again. In 2005/06 and 2006/07 it was represented with one car in the Toyota Racing Series and won the New Zealand Grand Prix with Hamad Al Fardan in its first season . From 2006 to 2008 Team Meritus was also involved in the FV6 Asia , the Asian Formula Renault 3.5 championship. From 2008 to 2010 the team competed as Qi-Meritus Mahara - the Arabic expression Mahara roughly means "guaranteeing services in a professional manner" - in the GP2 Asia series and achieved a race win in 2009/2010 with Luca Filippi and second place in the overall driver ranking.

With Vincenzo Sospiri (Formula Vauxhall Lotus, 1989), Pedro Lamy (part of the Portuguese team in the EFDA Nations Cup, 1990 and 1991), Ricardo Rosset (Formula Opel Euroseries, 1992) and Narain Karthikeyan and Takuma Satō , who won the Macau race in 1999 Formula Asia won for the team in 2000, five former drivers of the racing team became Formula 1 drivers. In addition, David Coulthard completed his first test with a formula car for the team.

The name Meritus is derived from the Latin word "meritum" (merit, wages).
