Carlin , formerly Carlin Motorsport , is a British motorsport team. The team is currently active in the British Formula 3 Championship , the FIA Formula 2 Championship , the GP2 Asia Series , the FIA Formula 3 Championship and the IndyCar Series .

history

The racing team was founded in 1996 as Carlin Motorsport by Trevor Carlin , who was previously active in the team management of Bowman Racing and West Surrey Racing , and Martin Stone. Carlin has been active in the British Formula 3 Championship since 1997 . With Takuma Satō (2001), Alan van der Merwe (2003), Álvaro Parente (2005), Jaime Alguersuari (2008), Daniel Ricciardo ( 2009 ) and Jean-Éric Vergne ( 2010 ), six Carlin drivers won the championship title of the British formula 3. In 2001 the team was active in the Porsche Supercup .

Carlin has been taking part in the World Series by Renault (formerly World Series by Nissan) since 2003 . The team came second in the team classification twice (2004 and 2009 ). In 2010 Carlin and Mikhail Aljoschin won the drivers' championship for the first time in this series. From 2004 to 2007 the team was also active in the British Formula BMW . In 2007 Carlin took part in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the British Formula Renault .

From 2005 to 2009 Carlin was represented in the A1GP and looked after the teams from Portugal (2005/2006), Japan (2005/2006), Lebanon (2005–2008) and Korea (2008/2009). In 2008 and 2009 Carlin was also represented in the Formula 3 Euro Series . The best team placement was eighth in 2009.

In 2010 Carlin also joined the newly founded GP3 series and finished the season in fifth place. The best pilot was Dean Smith , who finished seventh in 2010. From 2011 Carlin was also represented in the GP2 series and the GP2 Asia series .

In 2014/15 , Carlin also looked after Mahindra Racing's races in the newly founded FIA Formula E Championship . After the disappointing first season, Mahindra parted ways with Carlin.

In 2018 Carlin entered the IndyCar Series with two vehicles . The drivers were Max Chilton and Charlie Kimball , who have already driven for Carlin in Formula 3 series. Best place was a fifth place by Chilton in Toronto. Chilton and Kimball finished 17th and 19th at the end of the season. In 2019, Carlien started again with two cars and used a third car in the Indy 500. However, only one of the three vehicles was able to qualify for the race.
