The A1 Team Portugal ( English stylization: A1Team.Portugal ) was the Portuguese national team in the A1GP series. It finished third in the championship in the 2008/2009 season .
history
The A1 Team Portugal was founded by Carlos Queiroz and soccer player Luís Figo , but was under the direction of Luís Vicente from the second season ; The British team Performance Racing acted as racing team in the first season , in the second and third seasons their own team was used and from the fourth season the French racing team Boer Services played this role.
In the first season the team was upper average. After it was able to score its first points with eighth place in the sprint race at Brands Hatch by regular driver Álvaro Parente, the first place on the podium followed with second place in the sprint race in Eastern Creek . Other highlights of the season were third place in the main race in Durban and third place in the sprint race in Laguna Seca . The team finished the season in ninth place with 66 points.
The team did not take part in the first seven race weekends of the following season due to financial problems. After the Portuguese financial group Banif Group was won as the new main sponsor, it competed in Durban for the first time and finished the main race with fifth place in the points. With seventh place in the main race in Mexico City , another point result followed. The team finished the season in 17th place overall with ten points.
In the third season the team was back in midfield. After a moderate first half of the season, with Filipe Albuquerque as the new driver, he achieved three podium positions: a third place in the main race in Durban and a third and a second place in Shanghai . This race weekend in China was the most successful in team history to date. The team ended the season in eleventh overall position with 59 points.
In the fourth season , the team developed into a top team. After missing points at the season opener in Zandvoort , the first victory in team history was achieved in the main race in Chengdu with Albuquerque at the wheel. This was followed by five more podium finishes, which resulted in third place overall with 92 points.
A1 Team Portugal participated in 32 race weekends of the A1GP series.
